Should politicians who joke about past pot use turn themselves in for prosecution?

I'm curious why politicians love to joke about their previous pot use at the same time they support laws to lock up citizens who do the exact same thing that they did. Shouldn't they race to the nearest police station and confess their crimes for prosecution?
 
USING drugs is not illegal.
Possessing, selling, growing, etc. are illegal.
Once the drugs are gone, the crime is gone.
And the statute of limitations has long since passed.
