Should nobility be handed out for exemplary American citizens?

Hey you

I think I should be handed the title King of Texas. Or perhaps at least king of Houston. Texas needs his King and I shall be that special lord of Texans.

No. The appearance of egalitarianism is important to Americans, even if we don't always achieve it in reality, and noble titles -- even those that might be awarded for achievement, like a British knighthood or a life peerage -- smack of non-egalitarianism. They would make Americans uneasy. There are a lot of Americans who feel resentful even of people who hold doctorates of various kinds and who are called "Dr," despite the fact that those people put in a lot of hard work to earn their titles.

We have various awards for people who have done something to merit them.

By the way, you don't say exactly what you've done that you think merits a title. "King" is a royal title, and that's something Americans REALLY don't want on our shores.
