Should morality influence the law?

Obeying the law is a moral issue in and of itself -- so the two cannot be divorced from one another. Prostitution is an issue of self-ownership. If two people cannot exchange money for sex, it raises a question: who owns them? I'm not advocating that people go out and get hookers. I am simply saying that if two adults consent to sexual relations, the details of such an arrangement are no one else's business.

I know everyone says that religion is not supposed to influence our laws. But doesn't religion influence our social idea of morality, which in turn influences our laws.

Ex: laws against prostitution. Religion give people the idea that prostitution is morally wrong. That morality is reflected in the laws prohibiting it.

Thoughts?
Sly phy- I agree, but for some people religion is the only place their sense of morality comes from.

Spiritual books are written not to support moral philosophy,
but to support Spiritual Philosophy, therefore, the word prostitution in a Spiritual book means Idolatry!

Idolatry is usually defined as worship of any cult image, idea, or object, as opposed to the worship of a monotheistic God. It is considered a major sin in the Abrahamic religions whereas in religions where such activity is not considered a sin, the term "idolatry" itself is absent.

I think laws should only be enacted when there's a clear risk of harming the rights of another.
For example, I think the law against prostitution is morally wrong. It's a woman's choice what she does with her body and another consensual adult, whether money is exchanged makes no difference. The same is true with homosexuality. It's wrong to penalize someone for doing something harmless.

Religion is a form of crowd control. Law is to keep things in order to some extent. Popular subjects are the ones that influence the law.

Yes morality should influence law, but religion is not necessary for morality. When I get mad at someone, I don't want to kill them. It's not because I'm afraid of going to hell, it's because my mother taught me that it's wrong. My morals come from my parents, I have no religion. I don't cheat on gf's because I've been cheated on before and know how it feels, religion has nothing to do with it.

I believe that if we do not accept the standard of God's Moral law then we leave too much to human interpretation about what is good and what is evil and geography has a lot to do with it too

Liberal Asskicker nailed it....

However, you also have to consider that it goes both ways....

The morality of the people influence the morality of religion...which is why we dont burn witches at the stake any more...

Where are the children of these prostitutes and what are they doing when Mom is out turning tricks at 3 am? When they're inevitably are removed from her home, who will foot the bill for foster care? Who is going to pay to help mom get her life on track and for the therapy the kids will inventively need? Prostitution is morally wrong. It's not in the best interest of the community, the children or of anyone but the 2, 3, or 25 people alone in that hotel room.

I think yes, morality should influence the law.
In a way, law comes out of the social morality and
it's basic purpose is to protect the social morality.
Morality in fact is the product of collective social conscience,
though religion also influence it in the same way,
but that does not mean morality can not exist without religion.
