I'm a 14 year old guy and I have been interested in dance for about a year now. Last semester I did the school dance extra-curricular activity and enjoyed it very much. The problem is that the dance wasn't really a specific type and more of a contemporary blend of modern pop and a bit of jazz. The ECA itself wasn't really a dance class in that there was never a set objective to learn anything and we never learnt anything specific anyway.
I'd like to go back to the foundations of dance and start from there so I can really learn about what kind of dance I am into. I do like slower dance styles with more flow and sway so leaning away from hip-hop and techno but really I'd like a way for me to just learn about dance in general so I can branch out.
Do you think ballet is a good foundation for learning dance? I don't know if I'll end up specifying in ballet anyway and I'm most certainly not doing ballet as a career, only a fun ambition. So it's not like it's too late for me to start ballet then, right? Since I'm a guy dance options haven't exactly been thrown at me when I was younger and I'm only discovering what I want now. Can I and how can I start doing ballet at this age?
