Should I return my new mountain bike?

Two days ago I bought a mountain bike. Now I'm wondering if I should have bought a hybrid. I'm not planning on going on off-road trails, and need a bike for commuting on pavement. The mountain bike I bought, a Trek, looks really nice, but my jeans get caught in the chain, and I can't seem to go very fast.

The hybrids they had there looked kind of dorky, which is why I bought the mountain bike -- it looks nicer. However, I need something that is more suitable for road driving. The tires on a mountain bike seem to slow down the bike, and it's dangerous riding a bike where my pants get caught in the sprocket.
I am in fantastic shape. My other bike was stolen, and I have been riding a bike for over a year. So I am not "out of shape" or fat
What are "wire clips"? I have never heard of those
