Should I major in Biology?

biology (biological sciences) and chemistry are ideal premed majors or neuroscience if you want to be a neurosurgeon. but math, physics, or engineering majors won't do you much good for med school. just pick whichever you feel more comfortable with: bio or chem. and do well. then you'll get into med school guaranteed.

I hear the common refrain that I should stay away from a Biology major as a premed student, that the choice won't allow me to stand out from my competitors. Does this mean that I shouldn't major in the subject even if I want to? Will majoring in Biology hurt my chances of getting accepted into medical school?

If you want to major in biology, I say go for it. However, since applying to medical school is competitive, I'd suggest in being a double major or taking up a minor. Take another major or be a minor in the arts or humanities, which will show that you are multidimensional. Majoring in Biology won't hurt your chances...but you will have to be more competitive. You can stand out as a Biology major and as a music minor, or a double major in Biology and English.

Just make sure to get good grades in all of your classes, and be active in your extracurricular activities, and you'll be fine.
