Currently I have a 1999 Toyota Camray LE 4 cylnder with 117,000 miles.
I'm the original owner of the car.
Over the past 5 years I have ahd multiple expensive repairs with this car.
Recently within the past month I spent $750 in repairs. I needed a vacum switching valve for $500 and a Oil valve gasget for $200.
In the next month I'm going to need new brakes and roaters.
In the past year I have replaced the starter motor, idle speed control and spark plugs.
Three weeks ago I was 80 miles from home and my car wouldn't start and I called triple AAA and had to have my car towed to the nearest Toyota dealer. I was stuck spending the night in a cheap motel becuase I broke down at 11pm.
At 7am in the morning the toyota dealer called me to tell me that the repair would be $200 to replace my gear shifter wires.
What happened is after parking my car to go inside a grocery store and get a snack for the ride home I returned to my car 15 minutes later and it wouldn't start.
I can't sell the car because the check engine light is on. I just had a smog test a few months ago and am good to go for 2 more years. In california you fail the smog test if the check enging light is on. In California also you can't register your car if you don't pass the smog test.
To get the check engine light fixed I need to replace the Charcoal canister which would cost $700.
Due to tough economic times I'm unable to afford another car.
If this car would die I would have to take the bus.
Should I continue to drive this car or get rid of it?
Becuase of the problems I have had with this car I"m afraid to take it on a driving trip of 150 miles each way.
I don't know what to do? I need a car but can't afford a new car and don't like having an unreleable car.
