Should I just take out a loan for college?

Hello!

I'm 19 and a first year college student. I have not registered for my second semester because I have not payed the cost of the first semester, the reason is I had filled out the FAFSA and TAP Application, it resulted that only TAP was "accepted" and paid $814 for me, dealing with FAFSA has been too much, it seems like what it covers isn't much of a help (don't know why).

I cannot register for this upcoming semester if I don't pay what is due ($11,863). I guess I can still try and see what's up with the FAFSA application but I'm sure it won't cover all or most of what I owe right now. When I was in high school I had a rough time in senior year (personal issues that affected my school work) I was 17 and opted to do independent study at home (seemed like the best option at the time), when I accomplished graduating I hadn't received any guidance on anything for college, so pretty much I'm figuring this out on my own as I go along.

I've heard a lot of people saying how going for a loan is not the best thing to do, but I've also met lots (mostly everyone) who have payed off their college with loans, How do I go about this?

I don't know what are the options I have...I am already late for registering for the next semester, so I need to make a decision soon... Please help, and sorry for not being well informed, I didn't choose for things to happen the way they have, but I'm trying to do what I have to do and go to college.
