Should I invite this guy over to help me paint? I'm not sure if it's acceptable?

A friend of a friend I met recently again at a going away party, we chatted most of the night. I said I was about to paint my room with a new colour and a mural, and I could do with some people to help. He said he would help and I said I really did need people. He said he was serious too, and mentioned it again later in the night (maybe joking?). He told me about painting he'd done in his house.

I got his contact details, mentioned it again at the end of the night and he said I could call.

Our mutual friend said he really did want to help.

Now I don't know what to do! I can't tell if he was serious or not. Could I could easily call him and just say I've started painting if he really has nothing better to do and wants to help.

I'm shy so my instinct is that he was kidding and it will be embarrassing if I ask - but a little voice keeps telling me "nothing ventured nothing gained" and "what's the worst that can happen?"

Call him, say hey. Start a normal conversation, then ask as if you totally forgot about it. Go like : "oh hey, you still wanna come and help me paint"
or something like "did u wanna come and help me paint" kinda things. It is nervewracking, and u dont wanna be embarassed, but next month, you'll be wondering why you never did ask him. Then you feel worse :p
