Should I Insist On A New Book?

Ok so I let my friends borrow this book of mine, it was a field guide about $20, and someone stole it. They said they would buy me a new one and they never did. I need this field guide soon in about a week and I'm at a lost. Should I insist on a new book, or just buy another one. Also, I'm friends with both of their whole families which only adds to the awkwardness. What should I do?

i would just send them a text or call them and just casually say, "so, my class is starting up next week, have you gotten around to replacing the field guide that i lent you?''

i would gauge their response to see if they possibly just forgot or if they actually ever intended to replace the book. i wouldn't push it too much since it's only $20... but i wouldn't lend them anymore stuff if they flake out about the book

If they're really good friends and you think they truly forgot, I'd just let it go and buy myself the book.

What goes around comes around - I'm sure at some point in time we've all forgotten to pay back.

That being said, if you are in a position where it would cause financial hardship to repurchase the book (or your friend has a habit of doing this type of thing), I would handle it a bit differently.

I would let them know you need the book back for such and such a date. Ask them if they'd like to pick you up a new copy or if it would be easier for them, they could just give you some cash and you'll run the errand yourself. Whatever they prefer....
