Should I have rang the doorbell, or did I make the right decision ?

I work as a car-mechanic behind my hours as a second job. Every week there's this young lady that brings in her car, some kind of a cabriolet, a foreign brand. She's always dressed in expensive clothes and lives out in the hills where the richer people are.

One of my fellow mechanics said she's asked for me personally, since she likes the way I rotate my tyres, whatever they mean by this. Anyway, she's dropped her car off and asked me if I could get it ready by the other day after, and I said ok. She handed me her keys, which were not only her car keys but the keys to her house as well. I decided to drop off her car at her place, when it was ready. I stopped at her place, and I held the keys in my hand. Her bedroom light was still on. I was hesitating for a while to ring the doorbell, but my shyness got the better of me, so I dropped her keys in her mailbox (it's a non standard us mailbox, thus those without a key can't get in it), smiled and went away in the night. Have I done the right thing ?
Davester, finally someone got the right idea. The ten points are yours.
