I'm a sophomore this year and I kind of want to backpack across Europe after I graduate. There are so many things I want to see....

Anyway, how expensive could this get?

Is it smart? I'd prolly go with my sister (about 3 years older than me) and possibly find another friend to come with us too.

Get one of these European train passes. Trains run everywhere in Europe and are fast and efficient.

It can be expensive!!!! But if you get the chance to go with your sister and another friend (yours or hers), DO!!! You might also want to check into getting a train pass like one answer suggestion. And if you are in any one city for any length of time (like you're in London for a week), I think you can get bus, rail or some other kind of transportation pass that can save you money. And, to further save you money, you can always stay in youth hostels. I am going to date myself here, but I backpacked through England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Gemany & Belgium in the late 70's with a cousin. We stayed in youth hostels and met some great, and also weeeeird, people at them. Since it has been so long I can't remember: I think we had a hostel pass & can't recall if we paida low rate above that or not. Anyway, in exchange for staying there, you are given tasks to do. Once, we had to stack chairs on top of the dining room tables. Another time, we had to clean some toilets :( Each place was different. And I remember at one hostel in Scotland (was my favorite) we had to be out of the hostel by a certain time in the morning and were not allowed back in until; like 4:00 or 5:00 pm. I am not sure if all hostels are the same or even if their rules have changed since I went.

So sorry for rambling like that, but your question brought back so many memories! If you get the chance, you will not regret it. You will meet people from everywhere!!!! Oh! And you can also stay in "bed & breakfast" places where oeople who own houses remodel them (rooms, bathrooms, etc) so travelers can stay there. Included in the stay is breakfast the next morning or at least it was in 1979. So many years have passed and so many things have changed since I went! But B & B's as they are known, can be a great place to stay. They are much cheaper than hotels and you get a nice bed to sleep in and a good meal too. Depending on the owners, you may even get lunch and dinner too, if you are around. i remember having breakfast and dinner at different places. Here I am rambling again!!!

If you get the chance to go.......GO!!!!!! But do look into youth (or adult) hostels, getting train or bus or other transportation passes too. and please check out the Bed & breakfast places too! You wull have memories fro years to come! Just remember to bring a camera (I didn't !) so you can record your trip!!
