Should I get an iPad or hold on to the money for College?

So, I was having troubles with my computer and it kept freezing so I started to think of a plan for what I should do if my computer were to completely die on me.

My computer seems to be holding up on me so far, but my friend got me into the idea of buying an iPad.

I was thinking about buying a refurbished 16 GB for $419 and the smart cover for $39. Right now I have $550 and I'll try and get a job for this semester of college. But, if I buy the iPad and cover, that would be $458 and I'd have a little less than $100 left over for the semester. I don't plan on spending that much money, but I'll also be getting a job, so I'll be okay.

Anyway, what I'm trying to ask is: would it be a stupid thing or wise decision to purchase the iPad 2 so that I don't have to deal with my computer anymore and I can just use the computers in the library to type papers and such. I primarily use my computer right now to listen to music and go online. Also, should I get the keyboard so that I can take notes in class?

I plan on saving up for a Macbook Pro in the summer, but I just don't have enough money for it now.

Thoughts?
