I’m a merchant mariner and I work on a ship as a cook. The main office of the company I work for is in Louisiana, but the ship I work on is ported in California. I have been working for the company for 4 years. Recently I was diagnosed with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. My right arm working at 80% and left arm working at 90%, with pain and numbness on my right arm. My employer is not working with me and they are mistreating me because I asked for time off, for the pain.
I need help. Should I find a lawyer, workers comp? Any help would be appreciated.

Workmans Compensation is designed to get you to financial help you need without you having to resort to suing anybody.

There is a schedule of injuries and a schedule of compensation - that is, you have carpal tunnel syndrome, there is a schedule that lists the number of weeks worth of pay you get for that injury, IF THE INJURY IS WORK RELATED.

You don't need a lawyer. Just contact your company's insurance company or the compensation specialist in your company's human resources department and file a claim.

Yes find a lawyer who specializes in workers comp cases, and be prepared to wait, they love to turn you down, time after time, regardless of the validity of your case. I've been through this kind of thing before.
