Should i get a bmx or a mountain bike?

Well im having the opportunity to get a new bike. I am going on a cross country bike trip. Now obviously, you guys are thinking "Mountain bike, duh" But i have one, its a bit small, and has 5 gears, but its decent for me. should i get a new mountain bike, or should i use my current one, and get a BMX because i like doing tricks and having fun.
 
It depends on the condition of the bike and if tires and brakes are still good.I know thet there are a variety of BMX that are designed for mountain BMX but they are kind of expensive
