Should I drive to Melbourne from Sydney or would it be safer to hire a car in Melbourne?

I'm thinking of visiting family friends in Melbourne over the Easter holiday, but need a car to drive around there. Not sure if it's a good idea to drive up since its dangerous so I was thinking about hiring a car. Any suggestions?
