Should I buy a 2007/2008 Ford Focus or Volvo S40?

I am completely at a loss - I am used to driving a ford fiesta and my milage has increased however and I wish to drive a sturdier car. I think I have nailed my decisions down to either the ford focus or Volvo S40 (second hand either 07/08 reg). I noticed on Auto trader they seem to be about the same price with S40 combined 39mpg and Focus 42mpg. I don't know which one to get (if either!!). I noticed a VW Golf is roughly £7000 second hand after 20k miles wheras I can get an 08 S40 with heated seats for £8700....is it worth it? Which are cheaper to run and service? I just don't want to waste my money but want a safe solid car....many thanks for your throughts - ideas on other cars that are reliable and safe much appreciated!! thanks in advance ...
 
I had an 03 focus and absolutly loved it. It was great on gas and didn't feel as small on the inside as it looks. It is higher than a lot of small cars so that make it seem larger on the inside.
 
You must not live in the US because here Volvos are VERY expensive and not even comparable to Fords. Here in the US Fords will be much less expensive to maintain and to fix. But Volvos will hold their value longer. Also remember if you buy something used you will not be hit with huge depreciation. I dont know where you live but heated seats are nice, I have them in my VW. Volvos are reliable, safe, but usually more expensive so I think in the long run you are better with the Volvo.
