Should I avoid the PRE facelift (2003) Toyota Celica vvti?

see my 1st post (my 1st post said younger should have been older)

Due to reported oil problems in pre 2003 celica is it best to avoid buying a 2000 to 2002 reg.Celica vvti
.
Did these problems, which I believe caused VERY costly repairs affect
a) The majority
b) a minority
c) ALL
of Toyota Celica 7th generation (pre face lift models) 2000-2002 inclusive
please don't make your answer too technical (as I don't know much about cars)
