Should governments reduce financial aid for the middle class?

[Don't freak out or anything, this is a question from my government class.]

Should governments reduce financial aid for the middle income students in order to provide more college grants to the poor?

Loved if people could share opinions and what not! :)
Just so everyone knows, high school student here! I'm in A.P. Government and this question is really... really hard to decide on. Tomorrow there's a debate and hearing both sides can (and hopefully) help me decide on a definite yes or no.

No.

Middle income students don't get much financial aid as it is. It is already very difficult to get much of anything in terms of grants for education if you come from a middle class family. Sadly, our government has decreased the available financial aid for students steadily over the last 20 years. We have a problem in that we are graduating less students, and those that do graduate are often burdened with debt.

We need to take education loans away from private lenders and have them handled by government. Education loans were never intended to be a profit source, they were meant to help the public afford college. Many recent graduates can only manage to pay interest, and many of the banks are charging 13% interest so that recent grads pay interest only, and can't start paying down the debt.

Considering that prime interest rates are at an all time low, education loan lenders are making a killing.

America is a rich country, but sadly we have squandered our wealth and not invested in our own country and our own people. All other industrialized countries are investing in their people, and support higher education for anyone who wants it.

By the way. FHA loans did not cause the mortgage meltdown. FHA loans and no down payment GI loans have been around for decades and they have worked to help middle class and lower income people get homes.

The change in financial regulation of mortgage lenders caused the mortgage meltdown. It was irresponsible and greedy mortgage brokers and their "creative financing" schemes that caused the mortgage meltdown.

the poor already get a free ride to school.

my sister got all of her 4 year degree paid for by the state and federal government. now that she i working and all, she would not be able to afford to send her daughter to school based on what little money she would get because of her income lvl. college has basically become un affordable by the middle class. it is now something the poor get for free and the rich can afford to pay for.
