Should a gas stove smell like gas while you cook in the oven and or stove top?

I understand when you first light it it will smell a little.. but My fire alarms go off (my ceilings are only bout 7ft tall) even still i can smell some gas from the other room, which isnt that far away. i am hearing that its normal then i hear that there should be no smell except when you first light it
