Shoud I ask him to the dance?

He is my best guy friend. We always joke about how we "love" each other but i think neither one of us really knows how we feel. I like him and he is a great guy. his parents are very nice to me as well. the winter formal is coming up and my friends want me to ask some one. shoud i ask him? if so how?(formals at our school often mean that you are in a relationship or will be)
 
This trick never fails:

Get a huge boulder and write "NO" on it. Then get a small pebble and write "YES" on it. Put them in front of his house door. Then write a note that says,

"Dear (his name),
Will you go to the winter formal with me? If yes, bring me the YES pebble. If no, then bring me the NO boulder"
Put the note and the boulder and pebble in front of his door. When he opens he finds them in front of his house, he HAS to say yes because he really doesn't want to carry a huge boulder to you. Try it! It works :D
