Shortcuts?

I noticed an item for 'shortcuts' in the Prefs, so I built a bunch of them, for the names of jobs I do regularly and like to keep track of. But now I don't know how to expand them! I've tried typing them and following with a space, or a return, but no dice. What am I missing?

By the way, I should mention that I want to use these across various apps - in the address book, the diary, Word to Go and so on.

To access a shortcut you've created from just about any application - in the graffiti area use your stylus to write a cursive lower case (L) in the text area of graffiti- on the screen you'll see the shortcut symbol (this lower case L) - the follow it up with the shortcut you created say "ts" which will time stamp the entry.

This area at Palm Support might also help.

Thanks for your help, Mooseman. So far, though, this doesn't seem to work. I set up "bp" as a shortcut for the long name of one of the places to which I supply work, for instance, and when I write "lbp", that's what appears - lbp. Ditto with any other shortcuts.

(Apparently there's a game called Giraffe that helps one to learn Graffiti; I've been unable to find it in my online searches, though.)

Not that I'm that enthusiastic about loading *anything* onto the TX since I tried Avant Go, which caused every attempt to open it or several other apps to restart the TX. I deleted Avant Go and several other apps but never found the answer to why this was happening.

What I'd really like would be something that would cause *typing* the shortcuts, or tapping them in from the little pull-out alphabet, to expand on command. That would be really useful.

The l must be cursive - meaning as if you were handwritting it not printing. The cursive l is the short cut trigger. I can't draw one here. Or if you'd prefer to call it a small "loop" symbol then perhaps that might be better understood.

AvantGO and the TX are not compatible - sorry but I've seen too many posts here stating that the two just don't work. And it my 10 year history of Palms - I've never seen Avant Go be stable on a device that is less than 2 years new - the developers just to catch up.

You can also check out a program called TextPlus that will help speed up the entry process. You can find it at smartcell.com

Hmm, interesting about the Avant Go.

I tried Palm's native browser for the first time, and was underwhelmed.

I kind of got the shortcuts working, but really what's needed is something like .... oh, what's it called - something like typit4me for the Mac - where you press a key combination to signal a shortcut, then type a couple of letters and they expand to the Gettysburg Address or your home address or a phrase you commonly use or whatever.

Palm, so far, seems kind of old-fashioned. There are all kinds of modern easements like the Back button which would make it much, much easier and nicer to use - navigating from app to app is just a pain in the ass.

But I suppose by the time I've worked out how to make it work well for me mobile phones will have gobbled up all its functions anyway, and a mobile phone will be a combination diary, calendar, baby computer for writing and reading, mp3 player, GPS gude, etc.

Considering the fact that a Palm has to do what it does with limited resources (processor size and speed, memory size, program size, etc), I think they are pretty amazing! We are not talking about a full sized Mac or even a laptop, but something where programs are around 100-200KB in size (on average), you have to expect some limitiations. There are larger solutions, such as Tablet PCs, which may suit your situation better if you find the Palm to be uncapable or not meeting your expectations.

Are you up in the Gettysburg area? My wife's family lives up there, and last summer my oldest son and I did the Boy Scout Trail around the battlefield. It was an amazing experience, even after just returning from three years in Belgium where we visited a lot of WWI and WWII sites.

Cheers! M2

True, true. As soon as mobile phones provide a way to write documents (the only thing the Palm really has on them at the moment), I'll migrate.

I've finally cracked the cursive L business (at least for the moment), but for the life of me I can't make it do a capital T, K or various other capitals.

I'll do a small T no bother; move it down onto the dividing line and it insists that it's L-full-stop. I'll do a small K no bother; move it onto the dividing line and it insists that it's LC.

Here I go again. I have a wonderful FREEWARE program from PalmGear.com. It is called Shortcut5. All you do is set up your shortcut expansions and pick a short suggestive trigger (I use "e" for my full email address, for example). You merely type a . (period) and your shortcut trigger, voila the whole thing appears like magic. I use it for all kinds of shortcuts, from my email address to names, street addresses, cities names, date and time stamps, credit card #, etc. Best of all, it is free. Let me know if that is what you need, I suspect it will fit the bill perfectly. By the way, it only shows up on your preferences screen at the bottom in the "other" category, not as a shortcut on the desktop. I love it and have used it since I found it.

Baer - My problem is that I'm a little gunshy after having big problems with (not sure which) AvantGo or PasswordWallet. After installing them, the TX kept soft-resetting. Until I find out what causes this kind of thing, and how to stop it, I don't really want to install anything new on it.

Sorry, I thought that is exactly what you were looking for. A program like the one on your PC just as you mentioned. Second, I have used this program for several years without any hint of a problem, and last of all it is freeware. Sorry, but it doesn?t get any better than that. LOL.
