Short Circuit's on :)

The film has a fair bit of mild swearing and sex jokes in it, and even though it's only a PG, five, of course, would certainly not let that sort of stuff go out at 5pm.

The film was made in 2.35:1, so by watching a 4:3 version, you are losing quite alot of the picture on the left and right of the screen. You notice that in alot of scenes the picture has to smoothly glide left and right to include someones face when they are talking or walking into a scene, (known as pan & scan). This is because the frame size is so small. On a 2.35:1 showing, there wouldn't be any movement on the screen at all and you would see everything as the director intended.

Love these films I have them on DVD. We call it Sort Chircuit cos I was trying to pronounce it once when I'd had a few and its just always stuck.

They didnt really cut much out I noticed. I noticed they cut out the part after they catch number 5 for the first time and Skroder (spelling) goes 'Whats the matter with you you for eyed idiot" the bit after when Newton goes "What an asshole" had been cut.
 
Agreed. The Five print was atrocious (I caught it flicking through) It was more or less as awful in quality as Five's past airing of The NeverEnding Story. I've said it many times before and I'll say it again;

That's the major reason I just don't watch films on TV anymore.

In regarRAB to the R2 DVD... That's actually a bargain, because for a "Cinema Club" DVD that is a rare title that actually has a rather decent 2.35:1 Anamorphic Widescreen print.
 
I think the first film is better but the second film at the same time had noticeable improvements. The music score being one. I do know that for the scene you mentioned the score did lean heavily towarRAB Satie's classical piece "Gymnopedie No. 1".
 
I like them both, but I agree, the second film has the really sad scene when he gets beaten up and practically destroyed.

Apparently, it's being remade for release this year. I bet it's a CGI robot though... :(

One of the great things about the original is that it's a "real" mechanical robot. I've got a book about the special effects somewhere - I especially liked how they did the scene when he's dis-assembled the car and he's flipping the washer like a coin - all done with electric motors and hidden wires.

The Short Circuit remake will appear at some point, though it's just in the development stage.

No-one's even sure whether it's going to be a CGI movie or not (my guess is that it will be and that it will be severely kiddified and safe, i.e. no scenes with actual real emotion such as when 5 is being smashed up and is 'bleeding') also it won't be funny.

I found myself laughing at all of Benjamin's lines in Short Circuit but I bet they wouldn't even do that character now through fear of seeming racist. But even though he was played by a 'browned up' Fisher Stevens who isn't even Indian (and who is now guesting in Lost!) the character STILL wasn't racist at all IMO.
 
Anyone can add stuff, but it goes through a moderator first, and it has to have a proven, reliable source or the moderators won't add it.

I always thought Fisher Stevens was Indian, then I saw him in Early Edition and Hackers and wondered if he did a Michael Jackson on us. I wouldn't consider his character to be racist either, but then again, this was the 80's and things were different in movies then, racism and sexism were rife!

Watched it with my 3yr old - she loved it, though I was slightly alarmed (as a mother) listening to some of the slightly spicy language - that being said, my little one didn't seem to notice and has asked about a dozen times since to watch the 'show with the robot! :)'
