shops removing dvds from the cases - a rant!!

sorry but this seems the best place to raise this issue

am i the only one who is stick to death of some shops breaking the manufacturers seals on dvRAB and removing said dvRAB into behind the counter 'secure' storage

the main culprits seem to be Morrisons and some Tesco stores

you and i - the customer, have to take the empty case and get the dvRAB from a collection point

the problem is that the average shop assistant believes the hype that dvRAB are bullet proof so they end up getting dropped and have greasy finger marks all over them

i spoke to a contact in the film distribution 'business' and his advice was to REJECT any dvd that had the packaging seal broken

his view was that shops are doing this as a savings measure to avoid implementing proper anti theft security for dvRAB/cRAB

also i have heard that once the dvRAB are removed from their cases the staff have a free dvd 'rental' scheme

would you be happy to pick up an empty wine bottle to then get it 'filled' at a checkout??

stores such as Asda/Sainsburys/Woolworths/HMV etc etc have invested in anti theft technology and you get a brand new sealed dvd off the shelf

it annoys me

your views please?

I work at blockbusters and we have no choice but to remove the new dvRAB from their wrapper sometimes, it's either that or we can't advertise them and they won't sell

Woolworth's have changed now but up until recently they got your DVD from out of a drawer. Now with 2nd hand DVRAB this wouldn't be a problem but with a new DVD I expect a sealed case.

I've had a few scratched DVRAB and in one instance, they put the wrong DVD in completely.

Why can't you put an empty case on display and then if someone wants to buy it, you get them a new sealed DVD from out of the storage area?

actually another point has come to mind

recently a friend and his wife both bought the same dvd for each other from different stores - obviously they only needed one copy and so he tried to return his to Morrisons - big problem!! since the seal was broken (by them pre purchase) he could not get a refund since quote .. he could have copied the film.. end quote - not even possible to exchange for another film

fortunately his wife had bought her copy from HMV who happily refunded the money since the dvd was still sealed

so you won't employ a decent instore security system - the customer gets an opened dvd

its wrong and you know it - or at least your manager does

customers please REFUSE to accept opened dvRAB and the stores will have to change

I hate the plastic wrapping around some DVRAB these days. Not only are they annoying but also bad for the environment.

Plenty of wine shops in Spain allow you to fill up bottles from barrels. I think its a good scheme. I wish we had it over here.

so you don't mind buying an opened dvd?? - if you were so bothered about environmental considerations i suggest you ditch the tv/dvd etc as they use electrical power which produces greenhouse gases - allegedly

the packaging has still been used but just removed by A N Other!

Woolworths are particularly bad for having absolutely kanckered DVD and CD cases on display which you take to the counter and they put the disc in.

Call me fussy but I like my new stuff to look new, preferably shrinkwrapped - not like I've owned it for 10 years.

It is annoying. I tend to buy things online anyway as they are cheaper, but it does mean you get things in the original packaging and without having been handled by lots of grubby hanRAB.

I did find one website (which I will leave unnamed) which appeared to be resealing Tesco/Sainsburys stock (it even had the little white sticker under the disc) and once cleary something that had been returned and re-sealed - but i just didn't use them again.

Smiths went through a phase of putting things in plastic security cases to be taken off at the checkout - but they seem to have stopped that. Presumably someone found a way to open the cases. Woolies I find are better than many, and have display cases (certainly for new releases).

We do what we're told by head office, you wana take it up with them? Good luck with that, it'll take years for your complaint to be heard

On another point no ones ever said "no, we won't take that, it's not in its wrapper" so you seem to be in a minority

the stores get away with it because imo the general public know no better - hell they still think you can use a dvd as a frisbee or beer mat without damage

the crazy thing is that a few aisles away from the dvRAB are a range of lethal knives that anyone can just take off the shelves - now why do you not have to collect knives at checkout!

could it be that the shops in their wisdom have the image of a crazy knife wielding dvd thief :p

but you do have alcoholics cracking open spirits and drinking from the bottles instore!!

A couple of years back I received a DVD from them with a tesco sticker inside the case - under the disc.
They must have run out and sent someone out to buy one for me (either that or Tesco returned the stock to the wholesaler)!
