Shoot Em Up

Has anyone seen this? It certainly does what it says on the tin, right from the first few minutes and hardly lets up. The scene with Ace of Spades was my favourite. What a rush.

It reminRAB me of last years Crank, totally high octane, and has some great performances by Clive Owen and an OTT Paul Giamatti.:D

This is seedy, morally defunct, low-IQ cinema for airheaRAB - Time Out. And that's one of the better reviews (two stars - most gave it one)!

I have to say that I went into this film just on the spur with a few frienRAB and we pretty much laughed all the way through. The film does feel like one long music video with maybe 15 minutes of dialogue and story but had a kind of old western feel to it. Clive Owen played an uber badass again but Paul Giamatti really helped to balance this out. The best thing about this film was the gunplay as it was all very unrealistic but was really well thought out. I would watch it again but I think next time it would have to be with a little bit of alcohol with lots of other people.

The only way to appreciate Shoot 'Em Up is to completely suspend belief and reality when you watch it otherwise some of the situations really don't look like they could ever happen. I particularly liked the warehouse scene with all of the rigged guns and pulleys to make them fire from a distance.

I guess if you're looking for a pure popcorn filck this is it and that isn't always a bad thing.

Saw this today and loved it...sure, its not going to win any oscars, and the critics will hate it, but it's one of those films that you can't help but enjoy. I thought Clive Owen was really good as the lead character - sort of a James Bond on crack...

I thought it was fab. Mindless violence, great lines and some great uses for carrots!

Clive Owen was as dishy as ever and Paul Giamatti was hamming it up big time but its a great way to spend 86 minutes in my opinion.

yeah, my first worRAB when leaving the cinema was that this movie made Crank look like The Godfather in comparison.

i quite liked Clive Owen's character but that is about it. Paul Giamatti seemed to think he was acting in a live action version of Bug Bunny and his performance was extremely irritating. the action scenes were ok but nowhere near as good as Die Hard 4 and the complete absence of plot/ character meant you didnt care the slightest about the outcome. even worse was the films sense of humour and the whole thing with the carrots....yeah, it was vaguely funny the first time seeing Clive Owens hardman munching on a carrot, but do we really have to see it in just about every scene?

Check out John Woo's Hard Boiled instead, the action is far more inventive and, at least, he has had a go at plot and character development.

I haven't seen this yet but, i will quote my mates texts who saw this last night:

"I'm not exaggerating, you want to see the most ridiculous film ever, go see "shoot em up"

I then asked if it was worse than the Transporter, he replied:

"yeah, worse than transporter, unbelievable. Infact, go see how unbelievable it is. transporter times 100"

anyone agree with this?

yep, worse than The Transporter, crank, xxx, anything starring steven seagal.

i thought it was better than The Transporter 2 though...that was dreadful

Seen this tonight. I'd agree that its not as good as Crank, but Crank is stupidly good! It just whips along really quickly, under an hour and a half, and it does what it says on the tin. I've never seen a film with so many cheesy one liner's!

I loved Shoot Em Up as its a mindless fun film!
This was on Moviehole about a sequel:

"A “Shoot ‘Em Up” sequel has got the greenlight.
FirstShowing.Net reports that “Our scooper has close ties with the studio and reported to us that the script was turned in and approved and "it is in pre-production and the leading actors have signed on for the second film." There was no confirmation on a release date, but it looks like it was going for a pre-strike shoot and in-line for release next year. Is New Line trying to start a Saw year-to-year franchise? If there is one movie that could do it, it would be Shoot 'Em Up!”."

This was on DVDActive.com about the Region 1 release of Shoot Em Up on DVD:

"Title: Shoot 'Em Up

I saw this last night and thought it was one of the best films I have seen in ages - it has no pretentions - it is genuingly very exciting and funny.

It's jaw dropping how unrealistic it is - there is a lot of snobbery about this and you will either love it or hate it - and I loved it . It never lets up - the plot is riduculous (well what there is of one) it is simply a chase movie with very elaborate ways of shooting people/carroting them.

For me the stand out part is:
when the senator, after his plan has been revealed, realises if he dies he will have some sense of dignity again, he is in the hold of the plane and tries to deliver a massive speech as you would expect in a US film (the writer/director is a brummie btw)

'then kill me, let me regain some of the dinity I ....'

clice owen raises a bored eyebrow and shoots him before diving out of the plane for a mid air gun battle :D

If people don't like this film fair enough but it no way a bad film, it does what it says on the tin and does it in a very knowing way - brilliant!

it's got 66% on rotten tomatoes and 3 stars from the BBC

Just bought the DVD,it's totally o.t.t and tongue in cheek, and the humour is flying around like bullets! This suited Clive Owen's screen persona perfectly, plus Paul Giamatti obviously relished playing his cartoon baddie! And Monica Belluci.....!:)

I liked it as it was short and action packed. I think it could have been funnier but I guess they were trying not to make it into a full blown comedy.
Also had a pretty decent soundtrack, again that genre of film.
It seemed similar to Crank, Smokin' Aces and some of the comic book type films.

I still don't know why Clive Owen gets decent lead roles. He's pretty dire imo. I'm sure he must be in one of those threaRAB about awful actors :D

Sorry for bring up an old thread but I wanted to know your opinion on something.

Today, I wrote an article questioning whether Shoot 'Em Up is the greatest action movie satire ever? Link to Article.

I wondered what you lot thought. (And by thought I mean on the topic as opposed to my (lack of) writing ability's.)

Brilliant movie.

For me, it's just a shame that it didn't have a higher profile - a lot of people have no idea what they're missing out on.

I puyt it in the same OTT basket as Starship Troopers, another little gem.
