I'm going backpacking for several months in Latin America through a range of climates and conditions, so I want to be able to pack light yet have all the shoes I need for the period. Here are the situations I'm anticipating:
- cold weather (high altitudes, way South, winter season)
- some hiking and lots of walking
- mud and water (rafting, Amazon trekking)
- casual urban
- the beach
- nights out
I'm thinking of bringing 3 pairs of shoes:
1. An enclosed water hiking shoe
(eg Teva Lava Falls http://www.teva.com/ProductDetails.aspx?g=w&productID=4230 ) as my main shoe for hiking, long walks, mud, water, and with wind/waterproof thermal socks, cold weather.
2. Ballet flats for going out because they pack small and there are some foldable ones out on the market.
3. Havaianas for short distance urban wear, the beach and hostel showers.
What do you think? Are wind/waterproof thermal socks and water hikers warm enough for cold weather like high altitudes in the Andes or summer in Patagonia? In very cold places, how likely are there to be places that hire out warm boots?
