shoes for after lumbar surgery

What brand of shoe would a neurosurgeon recommend after back surgery? I have been told to walk at least a half a mile a day, workin up to 1 mile a day within 1 month after surgery. Please let me know, I can't get any answers on any other sites, and I don't see my doc for 2 more weeks.
 
thank you for the info. I can't get up to a mile yet, but am soing a half a day. I was told Dr. Martens, rockports and even earth shoes work well for support and movement.
 
Good shoes which is comfortable for you, has a nice arch support. Easy Spirits, Neitrulizers have excellent shoes for people with back problems. Any good sneakers can work for you too.
Don't buy shoes with a leather or thin sole; you have to have nice caution on a bottom of your shoes.

I would be amazed if any spinal specialist would give the go ahead to get Earth shoes. They were originally taken off the market due to the vast nuraber of law suits that were filed by people who ruptured Achilles tendons while wearing them.

Your Dr. is right about the walking. My Dr. said the same thing, that I needed to work up to a mile a day and then 3 miles and fially 5 miles, if possible. But, he did not specify any certain type of shoe. I just went to payless and bought walking shoes. I did want to make sure that I got specific shoes made for walking rather than just tennis shoes etc., but other than that, I did not get a brand name or anything like that. I was told that the sole should be able to bend...so I went around the store and started bending ea. pair that I liked. I am sure I looked funny, but oh well:D.

I eill look into those kind of ties, but saw emily say thanks for the car swivel seat. Now that's new to me. Where do I pick that up at? Jeesh, I have grabbers, long she horn, guess I need to go shoping huh? lol Rightnow, I am using 2 thin cushions wrapped in a plastic bag so I can slip in and out of car easier. But a swivel seat? coool!!
 
They shift your alignment and posture. Some people swear by them, but I think for those of us that already have a variety of back problems, we didn't need any additional challenges. :eek:
 
Hi there, Just a quick note on the shoe front. I find it hard to tie laces so normally I get a slip on pair, or zip, or anything but laces.... I noticed when I was in hospital I just could not walk in flat flat slippers. I suppose my foot was flat and walking on flat shoes didnt work. What I have come across for the summer is these "Fitflops". They have a thick moulded sole and a normal flip flop front with the toe piece. But the sole of them is so cushioned and it is like walking on a big cushion. the sole is like the rabT's but none of this rocking and balancing on them. These are so comfortable for the summer.
The archsupport is good in them and they just mould around your feet. I suppose that is why they call them FIT FLOPS as appossed to flip !
I found them comfy so just wanted to share.

I was not able to get my sneakers on or tied by myself, and I was afraid that if I was out walking and one came untied, I'd have a big problem! I couldn't risk tripping, and there was no way I'd ever be able to tie it. So I wanted some good shoes that didn't have to tie. I went to a shoe store with my grabber and walked around dropping shoes onto the floor, seeing if I could slip into them myself, and then seeing how good the support was. (Take your grabber so you can put the shoes back on the shelf that you've dropped on the floor! :)) It took a lot of trying on, but I found a perfect pair! Really comfortable, great support, and easy to get on and off without bending!

Any good pair of "sneakers" or tie walking shoes will provide the best support. You may find that your balance is a bit off so it is important to have secure shoes on your feet, as opposed to sandals, flip-flops, etc.

I was very happy that my surgeon just said to walk as much as I could. He did not give me specific milestones to aim for! I was not able to walk a mile within one month of surgery. I don't think I could do it at 3 months, for that matter. It is noble to aim for that, but I had too much nerve pain in my thighs to walk that far. I am now 5 months out and am just now beginning to work through that nerve pain to the point that I can be on my feet for that much continual activity. And my fusion was non--eventful. ;)

It is a noble accomplishment to shoot for, but don't beat yourself up if you just can't do it. The important thing is to make the effort and do the best you can.
 
I purchased a pair of polo walking shoes b4 surgery, but not enough arch support. My friend recommended Dr. Marten's shoes, think I'll see if we have a retailer around here and try thos. Built for comfort and posture fitness. Right now, I'm so sore, I don't feel like walking today at all. So just puttering around the house, playing on the computer. Think I'll play some poker. Hubby went fishing, so alone again. Will let the board know about those Dr Marten's when I get some. Thank you for the info./
 
Those shoe ties are meant for children's shoes, so they can "tie" them themselves. Should be able to find them in the children's shoes department.

Thank You!! This is the best site I have found for support on my back problems. It is a comfort to know I'm not the only one dealing with the healing process. I feel like a big whine baby at times cause I get bored outta my gourd!! Missy
 
Thank you!! I saw those online last nite, only problem I have is the toe piece always bothers me in flip flops or "thongs" as they were called when I was a little girl. But there were some other choices on that site, so will give them a try. Missy
 
thanks Paula, any idea where I can get the swivel car seat for my car? I can start driving on Monday again. Be 3 weeks then.:)
