It's one of those films that's really well cast - apart from Collins, Hill and Conti, you've got Alison Steadman, Julie McKenzie, Joanna Lumley, Sylvia Syms and Gillian Kearney (Jessica from Casualty and Debbie from Brookside) as the young Shirley. I didn't watch all of it last night, but it manages to be quite rude and rather charming at the same time.

One of favo(u)rite films and I have Never heard of a different version for American audiences.. It must be well over 25 years old and has played often on 'telly'.
