That's mostly because it's on TV Tokyo, had it been on another station they would've gotten away with the oppai missiles, but then again there's always the DVD version
 
There might be a sequel, provided the show does well enough, but I could live with a relatively self-contained ending even if not everything is addressed and "further adventures" are left to be told (see Giant Robo).



I'd love to agree, in theory, but I'm uncertain about how well the show would work with a mainstream audience that isn't familiar with the franchise, may be turned off by the straightforward use of absolutely retro designs or doesn't have the patience to endure some of the slower episodes, particularly early on. It's not exactly as popular or as appealing as something like Bleach is.

It's a non-issue for me, personally, but more than enough individuals have complained about the pacing online or simply have no interest at all in this kind of show. It won't bring in the exact same Gurren Lagann crowd, to say the least, nor is the material really asking for it.
 
There are times where Shin Mazinger glorifies itself a little too much. The debut of Rocket Punch made me want to rocket punch the narrator.
 
If we're going by voice alone, but it's all in proper tone and style. The scene was so well done that, at least for me, the exaggerated narration only enhanced its overall effect. And in the end...this narrator is still nothing compared to the one from Robotech.

I'd say that was rather fitting, even if it's certainly something to be considered.
 
This is great, now all we neeRAB is new Gatchaman that reveals what happened after the end of the last series.

Because Japan will need to give us some real Gatchaman after IMAGI destroys it .
 
If people can deal with Eps 1-2 of Gurren, this should be just fine.

Besides, look at US pop culture. Super robots stick out. Optimus Prime. Voltron. Various MegazorRAB. Mazinger would fit right in.

It would certainly do better than certain other mecha shows have done. (Won't name names to prevent arguments)

Anyway, Energer Z? Talk about your deep references. (Energer Z was the original prototype for Mazinger in concept art. It was dumped when Toei thought the idea of a guy riding a motorcycle into the heroic robot was a bit too reminiscent of Kamen Rider).

I've only been able to see the first few minutes but this has not only met my expectations, it has left me suitably impressed. And confused too, but that's less important for the time being.

In short, this is awesome and right from the beginning it certainly seems to have enough action, style and overall entertainment value to match its arabitions. Production values, voice acting, music...no problems there.

More detailed thoughts...after a couple of hours or so, I would estimate.

Will it be the real thing? or just a cheap knockoff as useful as Aphrodite Ace & The Mazinger Army?
 
After watching the whole thing, here's a bit more about it.

The Good:

-A very action-packed first episode that throws you right into the action and never lets up.

-There's lots of potential which, I imagine, will be retroactively developed and presented in order to explain how things ended up like this. The series definitely has strong Giant Robo vibes. The entire cast gets in on the action, with or without robots, and it probably won't just be Kouji blowing the enemies away on his own. Some bits of characterization might also be interesting, from what little I managed to understand.

The Bad:

-For a first episode, this is definitely very confusing, even for those familiar with the material, and might be getting ahead of itself. Lots of characters, new and old, are introduced and used in a very short time without too much exposition. I am assuming that the series will go back to a more reasonable pace next week, but this could turn some people off if they aren't patient enough.

-Sometimes the animation does have its weaker points, even if it generally looks great. Although that doesn't really bother me, hopefully this doesn't mean there will be budget problems further down the road. Imagawa is allegedly infamous for spending too much during Giant Robo, which was an OVA and not a TV series. It would be a shame if that became a big issue here.
 
Hmm. Seems as though Dr. Hell is possibly unleashing something even worse as of episode 16. This Duke Gorgon was the tiger guy in the first opening, and apparently he was in classic Mazinger as well.

Maybe it's just me, but it was kind of surreal and creepy to have Baron Ashura promising us a "new world" for Mazinger from now on at the beginning. Basically a reaffirmation of the commitment to be different from the past, which is well and good. Also amused by his line on how "this hell--no, this new world has been waiting!" Heh.

My opinion's still...generally positive. It's a good kind of camp for the most part, which I've come to expect from Imagawa's stuff. I also have to admit liking the idea of a robot that transforms into a fist.

I mean...a fist. It transforms into a fist. How unnecessary is that? But it's cool and very super robot-ish.

One criticism: the Danube story fell rather flat to me. Did Mazinger really have to kill it? I can't see it.
 
This is definitely something close to what I'd expect from a pilot., so thanks for that detail. I hope it confirms that things should begin to make more sense soon enough.

By which I only mean as much sense as you can possibly demand from this kind of show.
 
I feel much better about Big Bang Punch now. The detailed transformation in the OP is pretty sweet and something I wasn't expecting. The only downside for me isn't a real downside per se: how do you top something like that if they do a sequel?

As for Danube, she wasn't going to be talked down and she was actually the closest to a match Mazinger has had so far. Mazinger already lost an arm to a deflected Rust Hurricane, restraint wasn't going to be possible.
