Shikabane Hime (aka The New Gainax Show) Talkback

Are you caught up yet? Because episode 6 is up. I'm finally back at my own computer, so I'll watch that now. I can't wait to see what happens. Unfortunately, I'll probably go to bed when it's over, so I won't be able to post any talkback until tomorrow. But you still can. Watch away!

So apparently opinion on the series has been quite muted with the end of the series having come and passed. Even Animeondvd fans can't bring themsleves to love it, although they don't hate it either. Looks like this isn't another unanimous smash hit by Gainax after all--although I think a lot of Gainax fans conveniently choose to ignore Mahoromatic and This Ugly Yet Beautiful World--both largely mediocre series, and the mixed reactions to Abenobashi.

Episode 7 is up. Same situation with me as last time. Damn, I never got around to saying anything else about the last one. Hopefully I do with this one. I can't wait to see what happens in this one. How caught up are you, garfield? This thread neeRAB some posts by someone other than me.

Gainax's specialty is original work+mecha. Shikabane is neither, unfortunately and that's really where its fault lie. The ending could've been better (okay a lot better....) but I've expected it for quite some time now. Overall, the show was fun but I won't be re-watching it anytime soon.

Dude, I am so sorry. I keep forgetting to watch this. Darn I'm like 4 episodes behind. Anyway, I just finished 5 and am starting on 6 while typing this. I should be up to date by the end of the day.

(I keep thinking "Darn it, FuniOP is going to kill me for missing this again.")

Anyway, episode 5 was like something you would see in a horror movie. Not like that's a bad thing.

EDIT: Yamagami is Ka-Wai-Ii! With a capital "K." I think today's Gainax reference was that she was totally channeling Yoko when she went all badass at the end of episode 5.
EDIT2: You know, the OP is really good, but it is really depressing when you actually read the lyrics.

Why does Gainax love to make these endings that just suck? It's not creative, it's just pissing us off (Or me off anyway). I mean, Gurren Lagann could have had the best ending in the world if it was wasn't for that ONE THING! (You know what I mean)

The series as a whole was great but this ending was awful. Gainax, try actually attempting to make an ending next time.

Oh, it was very awesome and meaningful....the only problem was that one little death at the end (Mainly because I didn't see it coming at all). Yeah, I know what it represents and I know that comparing that one event to the rest of the final episode is nothing but....darn it, I wanted a really happy and empowering ending. Not an empowering ending...except that one person's still dead.

But I can't hold that against TTGL. It just could have been a bit more perfect is all. (But don't take that to make it sound like I don't think that GL's ending is the best one Gainax ever put out though)

Ahaha, I'm not going to kill you. You're the only other person who even does watch this.

Yeah, I'm sure that has been used in a horror movie before.

Keep watching. There will be new Shikabane Hime with every new episode.

Finished 6 moving on to 7.

Ugh...Kagami keeps annoying me. Not because he's a bad character or anything (in fact he's probably the most normal protagonist Gainax has made in a long time) but because we're nearly half-way through the first part of the series and they haven't really done anything with him. I mean, I can tell that they're setting him up to probably be a monk or something but they're just putting him there for exposition and stuff.

Oh no, Kagami asked his brother not to die. In anime land, that means that that person is the most likely to die!

I don't mind a bittersweet ending, a downbeat ending or even a strange ending. Gainax only goes wrong when they DON'T even ATTEMPT an ending. Like in KareKano, for example. But I found nothing wrong with most Gainax endings. Not even Eva (TV or movie).

I don't get why people have to have happy endings.

Gainax protagonist... normal? NOOO! Well, another thing is that he isn't really as much of the protagonist as Makina. I guess it's just that Gainax doesn't usually make the main protagonist female. Also, all the characters in this are obviously more normal than most Gainax characters (despite half of them being... dead). The most like another Gainax character one has been is what you mentioned as Yamagami channeling Yoko. You'll think he'll become a monk more once you're caught up (not really a spoiler since it hasn't happened... yet).

I got caught up and watched ep 8. Awesome that Funi is putting this up so quickly to watch.

Yea Kagami's progression (or lack thereof) when we're 8 episodes into what I believe is a 13 episode series is annoying. I know there's another season planned to start next year, but still I'd like to see something.

Although with Gonzo recently firing a large part of it's staff and cutting back series I wouldn't be shocked if the next season doesn't happen or neeRAB to go to another studio.

I've assumed from the start something will happen to his brother and he'd take over as Makina's contracted monk or pick up his own Shikabane Hime, but hasn't happened yet.

But this is still going, right? So Gainax should just keep making the anime. If they do that, this is excusable, because making a real ending wouldn't make sense if they were just going to continue anyway. But the fact is I'm just making excuses for Gainax.
