I just finished watching this 12 episode series, and I'm not sure what I thought of it. I picked it up thinking that I was in for a samurai hack-and-slash style, but found that it was much more story oriented and the violence, while central to the storyline and extremely graphic, came in short bursts and the focus was more on the build up to the fights rather than the fights themselves. I thought that the only downfall of the series was that it finished too early. I've read that this was based on the first chapter of the novel Suruga-jō Gozen Jiai so has anybody heard of plans for a continuation of the series?

I think I have a decent understanding of Japanese culture during this period, but still I think I missed some of the subtleties in the story (much like with Gasaraki).

Anyway, I guess what I'm asking is, what did you guys think of Shigurui?

To answer your question, damn brilliant! That's what I thought of it. But don't expect too many people to post in this thread. To quote a fellow Shigurui fan on this forum, it is "criminally overlooked". (You know who you are ).

It's one of the extremely few non-Miyazaki Animes I give a rating of 10. I don't know whether it was based off a book or not but the Manga goes further with the story than the Anime did.

I just finished watching this and it's a brilliant series.

My one quibble with it (after the abrupt lack of resolution) is the use of CG for peoples organs spilling out of their bodies. It didn't quite match with the rest of the animation enough not to jar. This is however a very minor point.

The violence is indeed graphic and I found it refreshing to find a series that took such things so seriously. The brutal nature of the series didn't let up at all really.

I can't be arsed typing out my feelings about this show for the millionth time. Just use the search function. XD

Its based on a manga which is based on that first chapter.

Also, did you watch the licensed version (holy crap I still can't believe Funi of all people nabbed this) and if so, how was the dub?

The manga to this is really popular in Japan but so is Berserk and we're still waiting for a season 2. Oh, and yes, they're both done by Madhouse who are notorious for this kind of thing.

This is classic anime material, but only if they bother concluding it.

I thought the dub was very good. None of the voice actors seemed out of place for their characters and the only time they defered to the Japanese was for the dance sequence near the end.

The series is currently available in the UK as a 2 disc DVD set for around

I saw the first episode at Anime Boston, but that's all so far. I wasn't into it at the time because I was expecting a lot more action. However, I'm sure it'd be enjoyable now if I took the time to actually watch every episode.

Maybe I'll pick it up on Blu Ray.

Thanks, and ya, slimpacks own. I usually ever buy anime that I can lend to other people or if at least one or two family merabers watch it as well.

But with this one I think I'll make an exception and just store it in my super secret hidden place. Got to keep the charade of decency going. XD

Its not that kind of a show. The action is about as realistic as it gets in anime. When something superhuman goes down (and it goes down a lot over 12 episodes) the anime goes through great lengths to explain it. I mean, it literally goes under the charcters skin and shows muscles being formed through brutal training as well as psychological trauma. And weird sex.

Every single hack, slash and stab resonates with intent and venom and has its own freakin backstory. Its mortal corabat at its most visceral. And homoerotic. XD

Also, the story structure in this is at the same time simple and brain melting.

I haven't even bothered talking about the nightmarish imagery and godly music.....

Basically, what I'm trying to say is that if you're still watching and likeing Naruto/Bleach animes this prolly isn't for you.
