I just finished watching this 12 episode series, and I'm not sure what I thought of it. I picked it up thinking that I was in for a samurai hack-and-slash style, but found that it was much more story oriented and the violence, while central to the storyline and extremely graphic, came in short bursts and the focus was more on the build up to the fights rather than the fights themselves. I thought that the only downfall of the series was that it finished too early. I've read that this was based on the first chapter of the novel Suruga-jō Gozen Jiai so has anybody heard of plans for a continuation of the series?
I think I have a decent understanding of Japanese culture during this period, but still I think I missed some of the subtleties in the story (much like with Gasaraki).
Anyway, I guess what I'm asking is, what did you guys think of Shigurui?
