Someone told me you can shift these diesels without using the clutch. I tried it and it worked. Is it bad to do or is this application suitable for shifting like this?

perfectly acceptable for shifting up when YOU ARE ALREADY MOVING.... do not try to take off like this and do NOT try to downshift like this unless you absolutely have to....
otherwise it is fine and it doesn't hurt it IF you know what you are doing and you are hitting it at the correct RPM'S if you don't you do run the risk of damaging it.

it's actually called Floating gears in trucker language and pretty much every truck driver does it. you can do it to down shift too but you have to hit the gas pedal for a second to get the rpm's up. it's not harmful unless you grind'em.

its called ghosting, and depending on the vehicle it can be bad. its not bad for ur diesel but it is bad for smaller cars like hondas and all that
u shud shift about ten mile below the speed u would usually shift at when u ghost shift

if the clutch is in the right r.p.m. you can shift without using a clutch. it is know as speed shifting.

unless you know the exact rpm range it is not a good idea.

if it shifts easily and has no bangs engaging the gears it should be o.k..
