shift problem

hello!!

My C50 has about 500 miles on it. I notice occassionally that the bike gets locked into neutral and for a short time you can't kick it into first or second. Any ideas what's happening?

That's typical for a new motorcycle tranny. Ease out the clutch or rock the bike a little. Eventually the parts will wear in and the problem will go away. Synthetic oil helps, too.

yes, usually after a full stop. If I try to down shift or upshift it feels locked in. Eventually it releases. Happened 2 times yesterday, yet didn't happen at all today.

Thanks for all your comments.

As you are pulling up to a stop, still in motion, shift into first, you can release the clutch as you pull away. I am in first before forward motion is stopped.
Practice a little blip of the throttle as you shift, to match the revs. It will become second nature, your shifts will smooth out.
Not an abrupt blip but a slight movement of the hand which allows the gears to gently mesh.

Clint is right, as the tranny is used and broken in, it becomes smoother.
By the same token as you become used to shifting the better and smoother it gets.

Practice that blip and soon all you will hear is a gentle click as it shifts.

This problem will usually go away after the first service, once the break in oil is replaced with oil of the correct viscocity and the parts break in a little.

I have had the same problem a few times as well, and all of the tips/tricks here have worked wonders. If i have an issue, i let the clutch out to friction point with it in Neutral, pull it in again and i am always good to go. First service this week...thank god

I have a 2007 C50T, and Mine does that all the time! I just ease out the clutch to hear a click in the trans, then kick 'er down, and it will shift while at a stop. If you are in 5th, you may have to do it a few times to get to 1st, it is common. My Vulcan did the same thing, and my uncle's Volusia does it too. I never have problems down-shifting while moving, it is only when I have to stop fast, while in a higher gear. It is common with a lot of motorcycle transmissions, especially these continuous mesh type... Nothing to worry about though.
