Sherlock Holmes [Robert Downy Jr/Jude Law]

I'm rather confused by this article since in the film theres a clear 5 minute disussion where Watson says hes not happy with Holmes obsession with him and that he cant understand Holmes is feelings since he does not share them.

I'm amused that a copywright owner doesn\'t know her own characters or understand the subtext of a film she has already seemingly endorced..

I really enjoyed the film however I can see why hardcore fans wouldn't

I saw it and loved it. I was surprised at the martial art Holmes but I think it made the film more 'unique' in the manner that it strayed away from the traditional Sherlock Holmes adaptations. More surprisingly was Jude Law's ability to hold his own against what was tour de force eccentricity from RDJ. Even more surprising was this was a Guy Ritchie movie I liked and that hasn't happened since Lock Stock.

Yeah, it doesn't take much to surprise me. :p

The lady threatening to pull the plug on Sherlock 2 really hasn't got a clue has she. If you own the rights to something, surely you'd know it inside out, the most famous bromance in literature. However, I read on another forum that she doesn't actually own anything and has tried in the past to sue and failed...I have no idea if its true but I'd laugh if it was.

I'd kind of blame David Letterman for leading RDJ down that path during an interview by asking him if Sherlock and Watson were more than frienRAB. Letterman was being mischievous and RDJ doesn't know when to shut up which is one of his more appealling traits :D

I read about 5 Sherlock Holmes stories the week before seing this (Boxing Day) and I'd have to say it's much closer to the books than the dreadful "Sherlock Holmes Mysteries" (or whatever they are) being shown on ITV2 at the moment.

Drug user, martial artist, becomes a recluse when not working and the actually quite clever Watson are all things that get missed out of the other film and TV versions.

I'd recommend it.

I finally got to see this, and what great fun! I loved this film. The performences were amazing. Even Jude Law, who I don't usually rate, was fantastic in this and a real scene stealer. So incredibly refreshing to see Watson being portrayed as competent and charming instead of the bumbling oaf he usually is in on screen adaptations.

I hope they make at least one or two more of these. There is so much milage in these characters and stories, especially with this cast.

Are they the Granada TV ones with Jeremy Brett? They were very highly regarded with Brett being seen as the definitive Homes. OK, he didn't do much martial arts but he was portrayed as a highly flawed character, drugs and all.

Hoping to see the Downey Jr version today, weather permitting.

I loved the movie and now after reading this thread and discovering, (having never read any of the books) that it followed the books more closely than previous productions, I love it even more !!!

I have to agree with Mark Kermode who said that he couldn't believe that he watched a Guy Ritchie film and that he actually enjoyed it :D .He said it was the least Guy Ritchie film Guy Ritchie has ever made, which was my reaction, too :D

For the first time in years I had to go to the cinema to see this film as love sherlock holmes, went with Kat and her b/f Matt as they are both Guy Ritchie fans, couldn't believe the price

Overall the film was exciting, fast-paced and witty, but for some reason it lagged in the middle and took a while to pick up again. Jude Law was surprisingly good, Eddie Marsan's always good value as is Kelly Reilly, but Robert Downey Jr's accent let him down. No one talks like that. But it's great fun and the recreation - or should that be re-imagination? - of Holmes's London is beautifully done.

Just seen this again at the cinema, its good fun :D Really enjoyed it, the period detail is great and RDJ is superb in his eccentric slobbiness making a good team with Jude Law.
I didnt know (before I read about it) that Holmes knew martial arts etc but its mentioned in the books apparently a few times.

Hey,
Are the Holmes books recommended? I've never read any of them :o
In the film it was interesting seeing Holmes as a slobby drug user/drunk, eccentric, martial artist (but still very clever).

I thought the film was fantastic also. The only down-side for me was Rachel McAdams. The American accent didn't seem to fit. Could they not have got her to play British
