Sherlock Holmes in animation

The upcoming release of the Sherlock Holmes movie has me wondering, what are some notable depictions of Sherlock in animation? I just watched the Bravestarr eps "Sherlock Holmes in the 23rd Century" where Holmes was sent into the future (and gained electrical powers as well), and there was also the cartoon Sherlock Holmes in the 22nd century (more futuristic holmes stuff). I think there was also an appearance or parody of him in a looney tunes cartoon, any other depictions?

Because technically, that's not Holmes. A rather close facsimile whose inspiration is meant to be obvious, but still not Holmes. If we wanted to rule in those close-calls, then I think we'll be here for a whole lot longer.

The Mr. Magoo classics cartoons did a Holmes story where Magoo played Watson. I'm also vaguely remembering an older Looney Tunes cartoon where Holmes had a cameo (and no, it's not the Daffy Duck "Dorlock Homes" looking for the Shropshire Slasher).

To be fair, Great Mouse Detective could be termed a Holmes spinoff of sorts - I don't know if it was ever mentioned in the film, but in the original book he lived on Baker Street (it was even in the title: Basil of Baker Street), which is a clear nod to the Doylevese.

The Looney Tune with a Holmes cameo was Great Piggy Bank Robbery. Wouldn't be surprised if he was in others though.

I've seen what appear to be straightforward animated adaptations of the Conan Doyle stories in my local video store. Dunno who made them.

Also, this.

In the first episode of the anime Detective Conan (or Case Closed) the main character describes his interest in Sherlock Holmes (in which a picture is shown onscreen), plus in the threatrical movie "The Phantom Of Baker Street" Conan and his friends test a computer simulation game of a Sherlock Holmes case in which Moriarty and Holmes appear.

I saw that one. I especially like the Missing Bride episode. That was romantic. If this movie fans out well, maybe they will do an animated series based on the movie like they did with "The Mummy." Wouldn't that be cool?

In the late 1970s, there were four animated adaptations of the four Doyle novels (A Study in Scarlet, The Sign of Four, the Hound of the Baskervilles, and The Valley of Fear) with the voice of Peter O'Toole.

Count Duckula had a Sherlock Holmes character (drawn like Basil Rathbone's modernized version), as did Ducktales (who was revealed to be a former member of the Junior Woodchuck Scouts) and The Real Ghostbusters (a good ghost). Alvin and the Chipmunks, Tiny Toon Adventures, Peter Pan & The Pirates had their characters re-enacting Holmes.

And the Holmes cameo in a Daffy short was from 'The Great Piggy Bank Robbery' where Duck Twacy tells the detective to scram.

I thought Sherlock Holmes in the 22nd Century was fun. Its up on Jaroo.com and probably that other site Cookie Jar is pumping shows on who's name I forgot.

One of the best cartoon of its time with gorgeous animation AND the directorial debut of one Hayao Miyazaki. I think you heard of him, right ;)?

Its a show I really would love to see again. I sadly don't think its available on DVD, at least not in North-America.

Just in the opening you can tell Miyazaki had a hand in this. From the steampunk influences to the strong female character (Holmes' landlady was cool!).

Lestrade,Sherlock Holmes and Watson were recuring characters in Orson & Olivia as well, with one of the street urchin claiming to be the detective's apprentice. Holmes is seen in the opening even and Lestrade was instrumental in the resolution of the Christmas episode.

Sherlock Holmes was also in the original Ninja Turtle cartoon.

During the European Vacation eps, the Turtles travel back in time to the late 1800's, and team up with Sherlock Holmes to stop Moriarty.

Fun episode.

If possible, could you get a series title next time you see them, or maybe a studio name on the back of the video box? I'd be interested in seeing these, but I couldn't find anything about it online aside from the animated projects already mentioned in this thread.

I remember seeing an animated adaptation of Hound of the Baskervilles as a kid, that I liked a lot back then. I think it was foreign made, probably Australian, from a sort of series of animated classics I'd always catch on tv. Those really helped get me into reading the classics as a kid (lots of Doyle, Verne, Dumas, Stevenson, etc). I also kinda liked Sherlock Holmes in the 22nd Century. I didn't think it was that strong of a series but it was a fun time passer.

There were a couple episodes of Scooby Doo that I can think of that had Sherlock Holmes references or apperances. One of the episodes was a Scooby and Scrappy episode called The Night Ghoul of Wonderworld where the gang goes to a theme park and Velma got to solve a mystery with a Sherlock Holmes robot. The second one was one of the 1984 episodes and that one was called Sherlock Doo where the gang goes to London to participate in a Mystery Solvers contest, the mystery being one of Sherlock Holmes' unsolved cases; there were several Sherlock references in that particular episode: one was the episode title, another was that the all the detectives met at 221B Baker Street, there were also a few references to characters from the Sherlock Holmes novels in some of the names of the other characters in the show, also the villain of the epiosde was the ghost of Sherlock Holmes, plus as I recall Scooby himself ended up wearing the hat and shirt of Sherlock at the end of both episodes.
