Sharp stabbing pain in foot?

Hello,
My friend's mother who is about 58 has a sharp stabbing pain on the bottom of her foot. It is located on her right foot, near the head of Talus, or the left side of the Navicular (http://www.medicinenet.com/foot_pain/art…
The pain is intermittent. It may stab once, twice or three times in a quick succession and then quickly fade away. It does this roughly once every minute or two.
Moving the foot, cold compresses, bandages and ibuprofen do not have any effect on the pain. The pain happens regardless and neither better or worse, slower or quicker. However, if she puts weight on the foot, the pain lessens until she sits down where it increases.
We are going to the doctor in the next day or two, but I was just wondering if we could do something in the meantime.
Could it be associated with poor fitting work shoes? Or Neuralgia? Or something else?
Thanks.
