UK? It works elsewhere.? In the Seventies I lived in Iran and used their shared taxis. They were cheap, convenient and went where and when you wanted. Up to five separate fares plus a sheep in the boot sometimes would share a Hillman Hunter clone. With mobiles and IT this could be done here and would make an enormous difference to travel costs, traffic, pollution, car ownership, car parks etc.

I know about sharing by prior arrangement at railway stations and elsewhere and about "taxi bus" services where you can join a vehicle on a standard route. These are trivial. I'm talking about hitching onto a journey which is going your way now or when you too want to travel.

No one in government wants to listen; I've tried. Am I missing something?

I think if for example 2 people agree to share that's perfectly legit. In my 33 years as a London Cabbie I did it many times. I know that doesn't make it legal, but I seem to recall many many times the authorities tried to implement this scheme, and generally people just don't want to know. Although I'm now retired, there was a scheme in operation at London's Paddington Stn where there were 2 ranks. 1 for those that wanted to share & 1 for those that did`nt
