Sex and the City 2 - bitter disappointment??

DO go to see it, GoGo2, I nearly didn't after the dreadful reviews and considering that I really didn't enjoy the first one. But this one is so much more true to the spirit of the series. Yes, Carrie is irritatingly self-absorbed, but show me an episode of the original show when she wasn't! I was dreading the Abu Dhabi scenes as I hated the Mexico ones in the first movie but they were actually quite thought provoking. Raising questions about a culture that is overtly mysogynistic while promoting western tourism and allowing the rules to be loosened when it comes to men's pleasure (i.e. the belly dancers) is not racism in my view, and the scenes with the couture clad niqab wearing Muslim women were too short but did strike a positive chord with me.

Go with an open mind, I went expecting to hate it and actually enjoyed every minute and will happily buy the DVD and watch it many, many times.

The reviews are way to harsh IMO. This film is very honest, the struggles they face at the different places in their lives, set to a very aspirational back drop. I like the lack of central story line, it was like a season condensed to 2hours.

And can some one explain the whole racist thing? the scene in the tent with the women was very powerful.

The point I was trying to make was that these issues were barely touched upon. And the treatment of Samanthas menopause was cackhanded, she was trying to stave it off whereas she should have been trying to deal with it. The biggest storyline was Carrie and Big, which in my opinion was a non-story anyway.

At least it's not as bad as Bridget Jones going to the Thai prison and cheering up all the abused heroin addicts with a few galaxy bars and a Madonna sing a long.

I absolutely love Sex and the City! Love all the episodes that were made and the first film. I went to see it last night and was really dissapointed in the whole film, Sure there were funny lines thoughout but for me there was no storyline and Carrie was just a cow throughout it.

I really hope they dont make another one cause I feel that will just ruin all the hard work and success that went into the series and the first film.

But that wouldn't be very Samantha, of course she would push against it at first and eventually yeah she would probably accept it but in a two and half hour film they can't go in depth into each girls storyline so they just have to touch upon them. If it wasa series it'd be different and it's a shame.

There'd also be more room for the other girls storylines if tey got rid of Carrie entirely, heres to hoping :D

Agree with this 100%. The bit that infuriated me was when Samantha was arrested and Carrie was still outside talking about herself.

Maybe the next film should be about how the rest of them cope when Carrie dies. *nevergonnahappen*

I thought it was absolutely awful. I'm a big fan of the show and liked the first film but this was not worthy to sit alongside them. My friend that went with me (also a big fan) also thought it was terrible.
They just had no material for a film yet somehow managed to drag it through nearly 2 1/2 hours! The whole section in Abu Dhabi was just weird and wrong not to mention extremely racist. I was actually cringing at how stupid that was especially the scene with Samantha dropping the contents of her bag in the street and doing the finger, swearing and thrusting at the men and women etc. What was the need for that? Also the scene where the women in burkha's remove them to reveal the latest Dior collection underneath or something. Bad bad bad.

I thought the outfits were mostly hideous, makeup was vile and the camera angles too were very unflattering. Samantha was reduced to a desperate woman rather than the sexy, confident and powerful woman we know. Charlotte and Miranda just had no storyline (although the drunk scene was funny) and the bit with Aiden felt like it was just thrown in at the last minute too.

I really hope they leave it now although this will make a fortune so no doubt a 3rd will be on the way. Although I have no idea what it'll be about? Carrie having a baby?

I could have written this myself - it is EXACTLY what I thought.

I can't describe how disappointed I am after seeing it tonight. I am a self-confessed SATC obsessive / anorak - and was gutted to have to wait til tonight to see it (first night all my pals were free to go and see it). I knew it was meant to just be daft and fun and was just expecting that - but I thought it was atrocious. I loved the first film but this was just bizarre. Two main things were missing: 1) jokes and 2) NEW YORK!

And it WAS blatantly racist. I was genuinely shocked.

I saw it yesterday

I was a MASSIVE fan of the series, even did the tour when I went to NYC with my mum!

The first film i thought was pants, mainly cos it was carrie moaning and whining for 2 hrs! She really annoyed me in the 1st film

In the second one, overall i thought it was better, mainly cos i didn't want to throw things at Carrie.

However there were several problems
a) far too long, to be honest the entire first 45 mins seemed completely superfluous expec between SB & AM (sorry, don't know how to do spoilers)
b) carrie was far too OTT with the situation with Big. I was actually on his side - what exactly makes Carrie right and him wrong?
c) The Miranda/Charlotte storylines were to badly handled - far too short and not enough in depth info
d) The bits abroad - OK, bit too 'touristy' and screamed that they had maybe done a deal with the relevant tourist board to promote the place? I thought the characters were so ridiculously stereotyped, i can see why some have labelled it racist. Maybe not overtly racists, but it just smacked of a group of americans knowing nothing about another culture and just writing about it without actually researching it.

However, nothing annoyed me more than how snobbish the characters had become. In particular, the way Miranda and Charlotte couldn't work out how people have kiRAB without nannies, and how they spent 30 mins bitching about the possibility of having to fly economy? I know the characters were supposed to be used to the finer things in life, but that bit in particular made me think the writers were trying to alienate the majority of their audience. It certainly put my back up a bit

No I loved it, neithe rof the films are as good as the series but the second film wa smore enjoyable than the first imo, I havn't laughed so much at the cinema in ages.

That scene was classic. I swear the whole cinema was roaring with laughter. I think Kim Cattrall made the movie to be honest. She pissed all over SJPs performance.

people calling this film racist are pathetic, it was making a point about the repression/sexism in arabic culture, ooh can't bring up anything like that, its racist!
