Sex and the City 2 - bitter disappointment??

I'm a huge fan, have seen all the episodes more times than I care to remember, LOVED the first film but just thought this was really bad. It lacked a big core storyline and I doubt this will be the huge success that the first film was.

I have seen the new movie and personally loved it! I agree with another comment here that it was a perfect foil to the first movie which was more drama and less comedy. Yes this film had less of a major storyline but it really did look at where the characters are now and if it is all they hoped it would be. Samantha was fantastic in this film after being underused in the previous film. I loved the Abu Dhabi scenes and thought Charlotte and Miranda's scene was very well done. I would have maybe gone even further with Charlotte's struggles to give her story more weight.

I'm a massive SATC fan and although the movies do not really compare to the magic of the series, I still love them and would love another film as long as they can wrap everything up as well as they did in the series.

I can`t believe they`re still churning out sex in the city films. watching 50+ year old women acting like teenagers is so wrong. please no more films, its getting embarrassing!!

I went to see it last night - I did enjoy it but I thought the Abu Dhabi scenes went on a bit- I switched off towarRAB the end. Agreed that Carrie was self-centred but then she always has been, I seem to remember in one of the TV epoisodes she was talking on the phone to Miranda who was trying to cope with a newborn and getting frustrated because Miranda couldn't listen to her whinging about her problems.

What struck me was that the almost 100% female audience burst out laughing at some of the outfits- particularly Carrie's one when she went to the souk and Samantha's in the karoake scene. Maybe we're just not "on trend" here in Horsham (I was a bit disappointed that I had dressed up and put some killer heels on and nearly everyone else there, including the girls I was with, were in jeans and flip flops. I felt a bit silly.....)

That bit was one of the many parts that iritated me! 'Oh my God! How do I cope with my children in the 10 minutes I have to look after them before the nanny comes back from the shops?' She's always been my least favourite character- vacuous, poor storylines, whiny- they could have done a lot more with her and Miranda, but they filled 2 1/2 looong hours with absolute drivel in my opinion. I loved the series and loved the first film. I thought this was just too awful.

I didn't see the point of a sequel in the first place as I thought the first movie wrapped everyones storyline up nicely. The problem with this movie was that they were trying too hard to hang on to the 30 something single girl angst that made the tv series so great. They really needed to move the women on and show them as middle aged women and the problems that come with that.

They partially got it right with Charlotte and Mirandas stories, however they really just skimmed over those and could have explored those in more detail. Samantha's menopause storyline could have been fantastic, remember how well they handled her cancer? Carrie was where they got it really wrong though. They clearly had no clue how to write Carrie as a married woman, after all the to-ing and fro-ing through the years with Big there is no way on GoRAB green earth Carrie would potentially throw it away.

Here's a thought, maybe Carrie and Bigs storyline should have been about how a 40-odd year old newlywed copes with the fact that she is too old to start a family and her angst could have come from her distress that she may have wasted her childbearing years waiting for the man she eventually married to make up his mind.

I couldn't help but laugh at the souk scene but it was from behind my hanRAB. As a non muslim even I was slightly offended. I kind of see what they were trying to do but the way to address womens issues in Muslim countries shouldn't be on a platform like SATC. It was very naive of them to try and do this and I was quite shocked a few times. As a visitor in another country you should ALWAYS respect other cultures regardless of whether you think they are right or wrong.

Lastly, I think one of the biggest problems in this film was a major character was missing from it. The City. The TV series was as much about how those womens lives were and the problems that came with living in New York City. Sticking them in Abu Dhabi just changed the whole feel of it.

I saw the first movie and felt it was flat compared to this second one. There was a storyline in the second movie. Carrie and Bigs relationship and how you can still live as a happy couple regardless if you have children or not. It showed Charlotte's life as a mother of two children and also how Miranda had to juggle her very busy hectic worklife with being a mother. And for Samantha it just went to show you cant surpress her no matter where she goes. lol. There is a huge story here, and it made me at points think about the movie and it was more of a real story than ever before. The Abu Dhabi scenes were great, challenging everyday rights of women and taboos. I found it completely a great movie. And very funny than the first one for sure. So do go ahead and watch it and really think about the story here. I hope there is a third movie but yes a series would be great again and I will be going a few times to watch this Sex And the City 2 again with various people. The first movie of course there is that excitement, but this movie is nothing but a strong follow up to the first. Cannot wait for the DVD!!!!

Yes, how dare they get old and STILL be enjoying themselves while wearing nice shoes, shame on them!!.

I feel a little sad reading these reviews. I'm a massive fan of the show and although the first film wasn't as good I still loved it. From what I've heard here I'm going to hate this second one....It has sod all to do with them getting old though! I can see the whole class and race relations thing getting right up my nose. Charlottes refusal to eat food from Mexico was bad enough in the first one. :(

PS...Obviously I'm still going to see it. :)

I thought it was racist too tbh. In between that was all the embarrassing scenes and that made up most of the film!!

V poor compared to film 1 which was fantastic, and much more in line with the TV series. They seemed much more spoilt and vacuous in this film than before. Carrie in particular was a complete bitch to Big. After years of trying to track him down she then moans when he wants to be a domestic animal!! Seemed quite out of character to me.
Isnt her wanting to go out partying all the time despite being in her 40's a little desperate??

I found myself enjoying Charlotte the most in this, the character ive always connected with the least...

OH, and the clothes they wore in Abu Dahbi looked RIDICULOUS!!:eek::p

I loved it. But to be honest i think it was more that I loved seeing the charactors again as oppose to loving the storyline.

Samantha and Miranda had me in absolute stitches throughout, and Charlotte did too towarRAB the end. I just wish Carrie would take a back seat for a change and give the other girls a decent storyline. I had no sympathy for either her or Big. I also felt the whole wedding scene was built around getting Liza on board. It was very funny but pretty pointless and I find it hard to believe Stanford and Anthony would ever marry

I would love another film, but I agree with the above in regarRAB to another series. That would be fantastic, but very unlikely :(

Back to this movie, don't let the reviews put you off.

the first films opening weekend in the states was 58m. This one has opened with only 32m (46 if you include thursday which the firsts didn't). Wasn't even first place, coming behind shrek 4 which is in its second week of release

I did enjoy the 1st movie, the 2nd has a rating of 3/10 on imdb so i dont think ill bother, that ranks just above troll 2 lol

I loved it, i just took it for what it was, a fun film with lovely clothes and shoes etc and it made me laugh, dont be put off by negative reviews!

Never ever use IMDB ratings as a guide, even allowing for Troll 2. lol
I was on the pafe for Tooth Fairy and there is a whole thread about people giving it 1 out of 10 based on the trailer or just because it stars Dwayne Johnson. That film is now hitting an 4.6 rating despite that which I think is a fair mark.

I just had a look at what the rating is for this film. Still only an 3.3 but that is after 963 votes. Considering it's just opened here and the US I think it's a bit early to write it off as an 3.3 film as of yet.
