Actually it isn't so far fetfched. My son stepped on a sewing needle when he was in frist grade and it broke off in his foot. Well, he was always a little melodrammatic so I didn't pay too much attention to the "my foot hurts" routine.
We had to go into the doctor at the end of the week for an ear infection so I had her take a look at it anyway. Turns up that after blood sedimentation rate and an x-ray that he did have something in his foot. A visit to the orothopedic surgeon led us to the operating room. It took him 45 minutes to dig it out because it had traveled up in his foot over two inches.
The doctors comment was you never let anything like that go because it can travel in your body. Lesson learned.
