I have had GERD since I was 16 years old. I am now 43. I had a Lap Nissen Fundoplication done at Mayo Clinic in Minnesota in 2005, but they were unable to do a decent wrap because my esophagus was already damaged, it did not squeeze like it should have, so they ended up doing a "loose wrap". It did help for about 4 years. I am now back on medication because I'm refluxing again. I decided to have a gastric bypass done and part of the preparation for that surgery is to have an upper endoscopy and a esophageal motility test.

The surgeon who is going to do my bypass called me and said he had some bad news....my esophagus is in worse shape than it was in 2005. So he will not be able to do the gastric bypass in the regular way. I will have to have a modified outlet out of my new small stomach because my esophagus does not move at all.

So anyone thinking of having a Nissen...if you are overweight...consider having a gastric bypass first, it will kill two birRAB with one stone!!;)
