Severe gag reflex

Hi,

So I've had an issue all my life that has only gotten worse. I have a horrible gag reflex. When I go to the doctor it's impossible for them to do the strep test because they can't get the stick down my throat; I won't let them. I try, but I guess I'm too scared because my tongue won't go down. Plus, when I brush my teeth and my tongue I sometimes start choking, and I'm not even brushing that far back. Is this something I'll just have to get over or is there a reason for this?

I've always called it my gaggy button...LOL...I have some of the same issue, the dentist have a heck of a time trying to get an Xray of any teeth at all, there is even an area on the outer part of my neck/throat that makes me gag if touched, I can't wear turtle neck shirts or any shirts that touch that area...

I was to have a test, Upper GI I believe what it was and wouldn't do it for the fact of knowing I would gag having any tube run down my throat. I was told that this is not abnormal. I was also informed that there is a surgery that removes some area w/ in your throat to get rid of this problem, but I never looked into it. I just try and avoid things that make me gag. Some people can do the mind over matter w/ this problem, but I tried that and it didn't work. So if this is a major issue for you then maybe discuss it w/ your DR and see if he/she can give you some suggestions....
 
I don't know if this will help you at all, but my Mother has a sensitive gag reflex also and her dentist told her to always make her appointments later in the day. Apparently, the gag reflex is strongest early in the morning. That may not be a lot of help to you, but it's a good thing to know. Have you done a search on this problem? Good luck!
