setting up 55 gal fish tank?

ok I posted a question about if i can get my fish tank set up under 40 dollars. I am wondering what are some cool fish that work go with the fish I'm planning on getting a jack Dempsey and algae eater.I was thinking about a Oscar but I don't know. I know that 3 fish is a little less for a 55 gal but its my first big tank and i want to take it slow. can i get some links for some good but cheap filters and heaters and all the other things i need for a fish tank I want all the beginner stuff none of the complex stuff like the under gravel filters. thank you very much
