Seth MacFarlane question

Why the style of his Fox shows differs so drastically (in a bad way) from his earlier works (namely, the Larry and Steve pilots)? Is was some kind of editorial request at Fox? Or this the way he really draws and before he was, uhm, cheating?

Honestly there is probably no reason the cartoons he makes for FOX look different. A cartoon goes through many changes before it officially airs on TV. A character in the early stages may look very different from what he looks like now.

It all depends on what design they go with for the cartoon and the characters in it. If he were to make everything look like the Larry and Steve pilots all the characters would look the same (for the most part).

Yeah i agree. This happens pretty much everywhere, with some exceptions (such as the fairly odd parents, and power puff girls) where the "shorts" said shows originated from, were pretty much the same with minor changes and stuff to make the shorts into tv shows.

Although it's funny you mention that, as i was thinking about that short recently myself.

I heard or read somewhere that when Seth pitched Family Guy ages ago, they weren't looking for an animated sitcom at the time so they held it on their shelves for awhile.

When they went back to it and contacted Seth to work on the show, the studio designers had some tightened up versions of the characters (Which I imagine would be like going Tracy Ullman Simpsons to first season Simpsons).

I've always assumed Larry looks differently from Peter because at the time Family Guy was developed, CN was still airing that pilot cartoon and still owned the character designs. That makes sense....
