I just saw the episode for the first time and didn't hate it. I would have rather it been Marissa that wrote it or at least she have been there too.

It was a way for Seth to let go of the Summer he had worshipped and see the Summer he really Fell in Love With.

I liked that Seth loved summer from the start too,
but I think what made me really love the couple was actually summer.
because when they got together, she turned into the one that cared the most.
and seth was always too preoccupied with other stuff.
