Service manual Help

JohnX, now you've gone and rustled feeathers. You better find a shop with a manual fast because by tomorrow your name will probably be on the "no manual for you" list at dealers across the country. Now the only way you will probably get a manual is to buy the 2011 manual, you're banned from the 2010 but they'll let you have the 2011 because you don't own one. Then just take your bike into another dealer and trade up to the new model. See, problem solved, you don't need to waste any more time on your cam change.

Nobody likes to waste $$$. I believe your true sentiments about the SM are reflected in your original post.

HD's SM doesn't provide a single, consolidated procedure for doing a cam swap. Instead, it uses a series of steps (e.g. remove exhaust, tank, etc.) rather than repeating them for a cam swap, cylinder removal, etc.

As for wanting to the job "now," best wishes to you. Haste and impatience have never been my friend when working on my bike.

It would be nice to have a copy of the manual on the H-D website in a PDF format. Especially if you just need a few pages. You could just print them out and get on your project. However, H-D is a money making business and they would make less money if they just gave that kind of top secret information out to everyone. Please don't blame the folks on the forum, blame H-D. Besides, it states on page 1: "Unauthorized reproduction and distribution of this manual will void your warranty and may cause serious injury or death."

My 09 manual has proven to be a valuable investment and has paid for itself many times over. I know that $50 for a book without a story-line or pictures of naked women is a lot to spend, but it is like the bible for your bike. Please don't go through life without your bible.

Today the cams...
Tomorrow the primary main shaft seal...

You cater to liberals and they want more & more.
It'll never end.

Let him go buy a damn manual like the rest of us have done.

I have the manuals for all my bikes. One reason I posted what I said earlier is that many jobs require referring to one part of the manual, to start the dismantling, then a different part of the manual etc. So the 'few pages' may not be many in number, but require to be got from several sections within the manual. Copying them is not a job of a few moments, even for a willing volunteer with the right manual!

So if anyone is disappointed at the replies posted, the OP didn't plan ahead, period. First item on the list is a manual, to check what needs to be done and identify all the parts required to complete the job being planned!

I am amazed that someone that is not savy enough to realize that they should own a service manual thinks that they can tackle a cam change.

Me too, think it cost me 15-20 bucks for the 2009 shop manuals....covers all touring models ...... got 722 pages for the mechanical volume plus download included the electrical volume which is another 794 pages. Click on an index item and it automatically takes you to the right page.....cool.

Refer to it all the time....best money I ever spent.....don't know how or why it's available in .pdf but I tend not to stare gift horses in the mouth.
