serious tattoo inquiry?

for people who have had a tattoo on their side/hip/ribcage area:

i'm interested in getting a tattoo, a few brief lines of text on the rib area next to my right breast, on the side of my body. no shading or anything, just relatively small, easy text. but really: how much will it hurt? is this a bad spot for a first tattoo? this is really where i want my tattoo and don't quite want to compromise on the area, but i would love some anecdotes or statements from people who have experienced this on how horrible or even on how not horrible it was. supposedly ribs area/hips are especially painful for tattoos because they're right on bone.

and since this will be my first tattoo so i have zero frame of reference for the pain, though i generally have pretty good pain tolerance.

any additional tips or advice?

I thought I had a high tolerance for pain...until I got my rib tattoo. It's often suggested that the rib cage is the most painful area in which to get a tattoo, and based upon personal experience, I am inclined to believe that (though admittedly, my one and only is on my rib, so I have no comparative reference). But you said something, here:
"This is really where I want my tattoo and don't quite want to compromise on the area."
If you are as sure as you seem to be, then the pain isn't going to matter. Tattoos, in general, are going to be painful, at least to a degree. The degree of pain is going to depend on your personal threshold. However, if you are confident in your design and its location, then take it all in strides. Personally, I found it to be well worth it. The immediate pain lasted only as long as the actual sitting (about a half hour). There was some discomfort after that, but that, too, fades. After that, you will be the proud owner of your new tattoo, painless and forever a part of you.
