Series that aged well

Looney Tunes/Merrie Melodies: Along the Warner Bros. cartoons from Bob Clampett, Chuck Jones or Robert McKimson are those who aged pretty well and can laugh you again today. Their animation is one of the most superb i ever seen in animation. A real dream to every cartoonists around here and the references makes the shorts again funnier today.

The Huckleberry Hound/Quick Draw McGraw/Yogi Bear Show trio: Despite their limited animation, this series can enjoy you again thanks to the character designer Ed Benedict and the great voice-actors Daws Butler and Don Messick. Those cartoons aged much better than their own catalogue studio composed of spin-offs and knock-offs.

Inspector Gadget: The original series is i think one of the only series from the 80's who can survived well into our decade. Yeah, the moral messages makes the show much awkward but the characters is engaging, the plots even if it's like a routine is marvelous and having sense. Unfortunately, the revivals don't give the reputation who makes the original series a real hit.

You know another series that was really good for its day and has aged pretty well was?

Dinosaucers!

The series had a weird quality to but the writing was very solid and the scene transition remarkably so as well.

I tend to think the series ultimately failed largely because it never found an audience.

Speaking of well written series that never found an audience, Mummies Alive probably fits the same bill. I gotta admit, it was really hard to get into the series because it just felt like the creators were tapping a topic that really didn't have much public interest, but once you really started watching it, the sucker was really well written. It was truly felt like a Richard Raynis series.

Well, I liked Beast Machines so that definately got a "aged well" feel from me.

Mighty Max, I still watch it on DVD and it's as good as ever. The DCAU shows, and X-Men Evolution.

Gargoyles, naturally.

And it's lucky for me I found that Exosquad S1 DVD. Reminded me personally of what a great show it was.

I'm no toon historian but i think those were the golden ages for animation. Obviously it's of its time, but still the great thing about them is that they were intelligently crafted and didn't solely rely on potty humor. It's all too evident what age range people are on these kinds of boards when you get nothing but mentions of 80s and 90s shows. I personally like the old school toons more since they came from tougher times. No computers or anything like we have now.

Fleischer's Superman for example. I don't care what anyone says, it's timeless...

Other than that, Swat Kats hasn't aged a day imo.

edit: oh and garfield and friends.

Ten years from now x men evolution will still look good. To me all the marvel shows from the 90s have all aged badly, even with all the nostalgia I find it hard to watch those shows today

Personally, I prefer Tiny Toon Adventures, I mean I am sure the Animaniacs has its humor, Pinky and the Brain is personally funny, but yeah, I will choose How I spent my vacation over the Animaniacs any day, everything about it is funnier in my opinion, and two other reasons, Tiny Toon Adventures is based on Looney Tunes, one of the best cartoon shows of all-time, giving the characters young counterparts, and there are so much more characters, I mean the Animaniacs basically has what, the Animaniacs and Pinky and the Brain, save maybe four-five characters, sorry but I prefer Tiny Toon Adventures.

Looneytunes/Disneytoons

My list is:

-The Real Ghostbusters
-Ducktales
-Gargoyles
-Batman TAS
-Mighty Max
-BeetleJuice
-Garfield and Friends
-The New Woody Woodpecker Show

Mighty Max just isn't given enough credit.

Its one of those jewels in the rough that I think a lot of people missed out on.

I've seen a handful of episodes myself since my local affiliates used as a filler in really weird places at really weird times.

It was a well constructed little series though.

I would say the Spawn series in the late 90's. For the longest time I thought it was a modern toon after recently watching the series on Youtube. Everything about the series from the animation to the production values were so far ahead of their time it's amazing. And the series probably had the best voice acting I've ever heard in a cartoon.

Mighty Orbots. This is probably the only American 80's cartoon that i didn't watch as i kid that i actually find entertaining today (in other words, about the only American 80's cartoon that i enjoy completely without the aid of nostalgia goggles). I suppose it's possible that i would enjoy for isntance The Real Ghostbusters without the goggles as well, but since the goggles are there whether i want them to be or not whenever i watch that series, i guess i'll never know.

Batman:The Animated Series. This show may never fall to the effects of time, amazing voice acting mixed with great stories proved that cartoons have a dark side and are not always for kids! A great mix of action and drama.

Dragon Ball Z. I remember when I was in elementary school EVERYONE talked about this show, it didn't matter if they liked anime or not. Regardless of what is said about it, it was and still remains today a worldwide phenomenon. Amazing action that IMO hasn't been surpassed in the world of not just Japanese animation but animation as a whole. Sure it had lots of filler episodes, but they worth it when the time for a fight came.

PowerPuff Girls. This show may of looked girly but it sure did appeal to males as much as females. A great mix of superhero action and the usual issues related to being a kid, this show continues to amaze me even today.

I haven't seen the whole series sadly.

My networks around here syndicated it and filled it wherever there was a gap. Kinda like what most networks did with Jonny Power and the Power Team or M.A.S.K.

No, the heroes all still had their memories of everything that had happened in the series even though they had been sent back to the start of the show. The implication being that this time around the villains wouldn't know what hit them since Max and co knew their every action.

Oh yeah Spawn had the best shadow and blood of the 90s -.-

The show looked REALLY REALLY good but it sucked. Nothing happened in that show!

Also the 90s X-men really want kinda lame. I have it on DVD and we MST3K it more than anything.

Anyway I'm not (really) here to blast other people's choices :P

Say didn't we have a similar thread just a while ago??

Gargoyles and Beast Wars have been mentionned already and there is very little I can add to this except to mention the fact that back when they aired I didn't have the same grasp of the English language than I do now, so it was a real treat for me to rediscover them and even see a couple of episodes I didn't know or remember. I just wish I could have gotten more of Beast Wars than just the first season  can't find the rest anymore now that I have the money to buy it.

Mysterious Cities of Gold is a serie that I actually didn't watch much as a kid, for some reason I didn't like it much... but then I got the DVDs and was floored at how GOOD it was! If you forget the silly part of all the characters speaking the same language (hey it works in Stargate so why not?) its just a well constructed adventure that leaves you wanting more. I wish there was more really.

Reboot aged pretty well and because of the universe the characters live in the CGI actually feels like it looks better than the one in Beast Wars and many shows that came afterward! (I'm lookin' at you Monster by Mistake!). I actually like the original look better than the retooling they did when they made those movies (movies I sadly have yet to see completely). The story is still as excellent as back then.

The Secret World of Santa is probably not well known around here but its always a treat when Teletoon brings it out of the mothball around Christmas time ^^ a whole TV serie about Santa Claus and his Elves is a bit odd of an idea but I really like the quirky and magical world it is set in. Its a fun world and has fun magical stories that a lot of kids would enjoy if given the chance I'm sure. It was a Marathon/Cinar coproduction I think...or maybe Cinegroupe? I'm not sure... it dates back to at least the early 2000.

Stickin' Around is another obscure cartoon I love to bring up in those kind of thread. I picked up a few episodes on an old tape and on a certain streaming website and man its still funny! I'm still laughing, even finding new puns I didn't get back then.

The Raccoons is a great piece of Canadiana that shows what Canadian animation is capable of! A show with great heart and subtle character. Cyril Sneer is one of my favorite antagonist ever, right up there with David Xanatos himself!

Beyond that... I don't actually watch old shows often enough I think.

I know I wouldn't enjoy Inspector Gadget if it wasn't for nostalgia and I know I can barely tolerate half the stuff on Teletoon Retro. I know I don't laugh at Tiny Toons or Animaniacs anymore...

Seriously what do people see in the old Looney Toons and Hannah Barberra stuff?! I just don't get it!

I kinda hesitated with Reboot a bit. Don't get me wrong, its an awesome series, but it wasn't till Season 3 where it felt like it was on mark.

I guess in retrospect, the lucky go free feeling of the first two seasons is what led to Season 3 being so awesome. You had the innocent times to compare to the bad times.

The contrast probably made it better.

Yeah I'll be honest and say I haven't watched any season 1 episodes in a long time ^^; I always seem to catch season 2 episodes and sometimes season 3 ones when it airs on Teletoon Retro. The first season was more episodic than the others.

Seasons 1 and 2 of Reboot was due to them making sure the series would last by establishing itself, and due to ABC's restrictions. Then when they were kicked off ABC and went to YTV (oh how great channels have fallen...) they lost the censors and cranked it up for S3.

Heh, I didn't immediately realize that line of dialog in the S2 finale:

"It's the ABCs! They've turned on us!"

"Treacherous dogs!"
