Serenity - Movie Of The Year?

I saw the film on friday with a friend, the first time I've been to the flicks for ages.

I'm not a fan of the series, altho I didn't dislike it, Angel was my fave Wedon series, but I saw the 'Firefly' marathon on Scifi the other week and thought it would be good to see how the series would have carried on if it had not been cancelled, and to find out what was actually going on.

The film was brilliant, fast paced, witty, full of action and thankfully explained the whole concept of the show. The choreography of the 2 main fight scenes was very good and could have come from a John Woo film.

I think if they had brought in the Aliance 'beliver' earlier into the series, done away with a few of the 'Lets steal something' episodes, and given away a bit more about River earlier on, the series might have stood a better chance. But on the whole this was a fitting climax, something that Angel should have had too.
 
Excellent film. The scenes with River kicking serious butt are worth the price alone. Excellent choreography and camerawork. Can't wait to see it again.

I saw it straight after seeing Kinky Boots so I couldn't quite take Chiwetel Ejiofor as seriously hehe
 
The one major problem I have with 'Firefly' in general (and I know i'm being pedantic) is that it's set in another 'solar system' apparently with hundreRAB of planets and moons to inhabit.
Now I'm no astronomy expert, but I doubt there is a single solar system in the universe that can hold more that 2 or 3 inhabitable planets, even with moons, it'll only be 20 or so, certainly not hundreRAB like the intro sometimes says. The have changed the intro a couple of times, sometimes saying another galaxy instead of solar system.
Anyway for the sun to be strong enough to light and warm an outta planet like Pluto for human inhabitation, it would be way too strong for the inner panets, and vica versa.
It just bugs me. :)
 
Well, it's by far the best film I've seen this year, although I must admit to being a HUGE Firefly fan. Having said that I was also a huge Star Wars fan, but this blew Episode III out of the water.

To be honest, I'm still speechless and I've seen it twice. I do write the odd movie review and I just haven't been able to for this without it sounding like I'm totally kissing Joss Whedon somewhere where he probably wouldn't like me to.

As for the spoiler alluded to, I think it works perfectly.

Wash's death means all bets are off. Suddenly, every shot could mean someone else's death. Any wound could be fatal. Hell, we could even lose the entire crew. After Book's death, you think, OK, that's the big shocker. We can relax now. Then, BANG, Wash is killed. Suddenly you're not so cosy.
 
looking at a picture in the official companion it looks as though its a galaxy but at the same time the shooting script says solar system but says moons were terraformed too so i suppose we dont know, but hey its sci-fi its not supposed to be accurate :D :D
 
I missed the series first time round then caught it on Sci-Fi last weekend then last night I saw the movie, it was fantastic!

It is a must see movie, i wouldn't be surprised if the networks buckled under fan pressure like they did with Family Guy and bring this back. :D
 
i was worried in the last stretch that they entire crew were going to be goners tbh.

i loved firefly, watching buffy & angel afterwarRAB and learning of his habit of killing of characters at somewhat short notice, so i figured one would buy it in the film. wash getting bumped wasn't expected after that.

shame though - i genuinely did like all the characters, so i guess we'll have to see who gets brought into the fold now to stir things up a little (at the very end i thought the assassin was going to board).

I loved the way they killed Wash as well. I watched the film at one of the UK previews and the entire cinema was cracked up laughing at his "I'm a leaf on the wind" line. To hear that laughter cut short with a gasp of shock from everyone when he dies was so powerful. It really emphasised how precarious the characters' situation was that things could go from good to so bad in a split second. And I think in particular they made good use of it with Kaylee. She gives this positive speech "screw this I'm gonna live" creating an air of humour/optimism and when she gets hit with the darts, with Wash's death so fresh in my mind I immediately made a subconscious/emotional connection between the two and was convinced she was a gonner too.
 
Yeah I know that bit, but it still requires a modicum of intelligence to run and fly a space ship, it's not something you can do while in a rage and all you can think about is ripping people apart.

If you watch the show and the movie closely it alludes to their spaceships not being in good repair.

I think of them as an exagerated analogue to marauding soldiers in eg. present day Sudan.
 
Joss Whedon has said himself, hes not a man of science. He sets up the scenario but doesn't care too much about the fact of it. And fair enough really. Know you weren't complaining or anything but just skip past the science and enjoy ;)
 
If ever film deserves a sequel, then this is one.

There aren't many films that I wish to see again asap as I'm leaving the theatre the first time.
 
Bought the Firefly DVD this weekend. :)

Was a huge buffy/angel fan, but for some reason Firefly never really appealled... However, i was hearing rave reviews of Serenity, so I though i should watch Firefly first...

Totally blown away! Very Whedonesque humour. Shot really differently. Great sfx. 6 episodes in and really enjoying it. :)

Looking forward to seeing Serenity now.
 
I had the exact same thought and mentioned it to my mates after seeing it last night. And would the spelling of the tribe be "Reaver" - somehow feels more right?

But overall thought it was really good. You just knew that River would kick butt at some stage in the movie - after all this is by the guy who wrote Buffy (skinny li'l blonde girly who kicks major Vampire butt every episode) Vampy Slayer.

Suprisingly gory too - I was intrigued that they'd allowed so much violence in it. I would have thought that slapping a 15 certificate on it would mean fewer people could go see it (and therefore less chance of a sequel?)
